Purpose of the Position The GBV & Student Complaints Coordinator provides culturally informed leadership in the development, implementation and continuous improvement of the Institute's student complaints management framework and student safety initiatives.
The Coordinator will lead the Institute's implementation of the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-based Violence by coordinating prevention and response initiatives, monitoring compliance, developing policies and procedures, preparing institutional reporting, and leading the work of the Institute's Gender-Based Violence Committee.
The position is responsible for coordinating the Institute's student complaints processes, ensuring complaints are managed consistently, fairly, confidentially and in accordance with legislative requirements, procedural fairness, Institute policies and best practice.
Working collaboratively across the Institute, the Coordinator strengthens organisational capability through education, policy development, governance, data analysis and continuous improvement while ensuring student complaints and safety systems are culturally safe, trauma-informed and responsive to the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and communities.
The Coordinator is the Institute's principal advisor on student complaints management and the prevention of and response to gender-based violence, providing expert advice to Executive, managers and staff on policy, practice, compliance and continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities - Student Safety and Gender-Based Violence
- Lead implementation of the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-based Violence.
- Coordinate the Institute's prevention and response framework for gender-based violence.
- Coordinate responses to disclosures and reports using trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches.
- Develop and maintain referral pathways, safety planning and support mechanisms.
- Provide specialist advice on complex matters relating to student safety and gender-based violence.
- Coordinate initiatives that promote respectful relationships, student safety and wellbeing.
- Ensure student safety initiatives reflect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives and culturally safe practices.
- Student Complaints Management
- Lead and coordinate the Institute's student complaints management framework.
- Manage the intake, assessment and coordination of complex student complaints.
- Ensure complaints are managed consistently, fairly and in accordance with procedural fairness, natural justice and Institute policy.
- Coordinate complaint resolution pathways and referrals.
- Maintain confidential records and ensure compliance with privacy obligations.
- Analyse complaint trends and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Develop resources that support accessible, transparent and culturally safe complaints processes.
- Governance, Compliance and Reporting
- Monitor the Institute's compliance with relevant legislation, regulatory requirements and Institute policies relating to student complaints and gender-based violence.
- Develop, implement and review policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Prepare reports for Executive, Council, committees and external regulatory bodies.
- Coordinate institutional reporting requirements under the National Higher Education Code.
- Monitor complaints and student safety data to identify trends, emerging risks and opportunities for improvement.
- Act as the Institute's central point of coordination for student complaints and gender-based violence reporting, ensuring the integrity of data and continuous quality improvement.
- Committee Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement
- Lead the work of the Institute's Gender-Based Violence Committee.
- Coordinate committee meetings, agendas, reports and action plans.
- Monitor implementation of committee decisions and strategic priorities.
- Build productive relationships with internal stakeholders and external support services.
- Work collaboratively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff, students, Elders and communities to strengthen culturally safe approaches to complaint management and student safety.
- Represent the Institute on relevant internal and external working groups as required.
- Education, Prevention and Capability
- Design, coordinate and deliver education and training relating to student complaints management, procedural fairness, trauma-informed practice, respectful behaviours and gender-based violence.
- Build organisational capability to respond effectively to student complaints and safety concerns.
- Promote awareness of reporting pathways, student rights and available support services.
- Contribute to initiatives that strengthen a safe, respectful, culturally secure and inclusive learning environment.
- Foster continuous learning and improvement across the Institute.
Selection Criteria
Essential - Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander identity, being an Identified Position.
- A degree qualification in social work, psychology, law, education, community services, public administration or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and relevant experience.
- Demonstrated experience managing complex complaints, investigations, case coordination or regulatory compliance.
- Demonstrated understanding of trauma-informed practice and contemporary approaches to preventing and responding to gender-based violence.
- Demonstrated experience developing policies, procedures and governance frameworks.
- Demonstrated ability to analyse information, prepare reports and provide strategic advice to senior leaders.
- Highly developed interpersonal, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering education, training or capability-building initiatives.
- Demonstrated commitment to cultural safety and the ability to work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, communities and organisations.
Desirable - Experience working in the higher education, VET or public sector.
- Knowledge of the National Higher Education Code to Prevent and Respond to Gender-based Violence.
- Knowledge of higher education regulatory frameworks and student complaints processes.
- Experience supporting governance committees or advisory groups.
