Purpose of the Position Batchelor Institute is a partner on the University of Queensland led Languages Data Commons of Australia (LDaCA) Project. The LDaCA project aims to make nationally significant language data available for academic and non-academic use and provide a model for ensuring continued access with appropriate community control. This is being done by integrating collections into a national research infrastructure.
Batchelor Institute has a range of language and research data, including the Centre for Australian Languages and Linguistics (CALL) Collection, person centred collections, Batchelor Press, and more.
This position will work closely with University of Queensland project technical team and with various parts of Batchelor (Higher Education & Research Division (HERD), Library, Information and the Communications Technology team, to develop and adapt tools, systems and infrastructure to suit a range of needs and develop local governance arrangements specific to Batchelor Institute’s language and research collections. The position will work to ensure that systems set up as part of the LDaCA project are sustainable into the future.
The position is expected to travel regularly between Alice Springs and Batchelor campuses.
Duties - Develop packaging tools and systems to suit a range of needs for Batchelor Press, the CALL collection, the person-centered collections and other language/research data.
- Adapt tools and processes (coding infrastructure) to suit access to specific collections.
- Participate in interface design and development work and develop procedures to ensure that Batchelor has the capability to maintain the interfaces, post LDaCA.
- Customise and develop data management tools and server technologies for reformatting, analysing and performing quality control checks on data.
- Build and maintain the user and admin interfaces to search and display language collections.
- Work with Application Programmable Interfaces (APIs) to enable use of existing systems for search and display of data.
- Enhance methods of taking datasets “on Country” via existing local-area networks and/or portable appliances.
- Consult on and demonstrate LDaCA resources for various audiences including universities, community organisations, and Batchelor staff.
- Develop policies and processes related to contemporary archiving technology that can be adapted for course delivery and deliver workshops about accessing archives and adding to archives.
- Work with ICT and various Batchelor teams on appropriate long-term storage of records related to language and research data.
- Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by your line manager, particularly in relation to Batchelor’s broader data requirements.
Selection Criteria - Demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse teams within the social, political, and cultural environments of Indigenous Australian families, communities, and organisations.
- Degree qualification (IT, computer science, software engineering or related field) and experience in software development and coding.
- Highly developed IT skills including proficiency in front-end technologies such as HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript (and frameworks like Vue.js, React) and back-end languages, preferably Node.js and Python, or experience with O, Java, Ruby, or PHP.
- Demonstrated experience of databases including SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB) and with cloud services (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).
- Familiarity with RESTful Application Programmable Interfaces (APIs) and experience with version control systems such as Git, GitHub/GitLab/Bitbucket.
- Demonstrated experience using DevOps tools including Docker, CI/CD pipelines, deployment processes.
- Familiarity with authentication and security best practices, including the ability to write unit tests and integration tests.
- Ability to develop procedural and guidance documents to underpin activities.
- Highly effective interpersonal skills including proficient written and oral communication which can be adapted to meet the needs of people from all educational levels.
- Ability to build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Demonstrated initiative and managing workload priorities.
- Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and practices, and ability to comply with Institute WHS Policies and Procedures.
