Purpose of the Position The Senior Manager, Communications, Knowledge and Culture provides strategic leadership across a portfolio that promotes and protects the Institute’s reputation, strengthens its identity, and celebrates its cultural and intellectual achievements.
The role oversees four key areas: Marketing and Communications, Records and Archives, Batchelor Press, and the Institute's Art Collection. Working collaboratively across faculties and divisions, the Senior Manager ensures these functions work in alignment to enhance the Institute’s visibility, engagement, and impact — locally, nationally, and globally.
This position leads a multidisciplinary team, manages budgets, and is responsible for governance and compliance in relation to intellectual property (IP) and cultural property (CP) rights across creative and scholarly outputs, collections, and publications. The position also identifies and develops opportunities to exhibit, publish, and commercialise Institute assets — including artworks, student and staff works, and publications.
Key Responsibilities Strategic Leadership and Management - Provide visionary and strategic leadership across the Communications, Knowledge, and Culture portfolio.
- Develop and implement cohesive strategies that advance the Institute’s brand, reputation, and engagement with diverse audiences.
- Lead, mentor, and develop staff to foster a collaborative, creative, and high-performing culture.
- Manage financial planning, budget performance, and resource allocation across multiple work units.
- Identify and pursue new opportunities for growth, visibility, and revenue generation.
Marketing and Communications - Oversee the Institute’s strategic communications, marketing campaigns, and digital engagement activities.
- Ensure consistent and compelling brand representation across all channels.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with media, partners, alumni, and community stakeholders.
- Lead the development of internal communication initiatives that strengthen staff and student engagement.
Records and Archives - Ensure effective governance and stewardship of the Institute’s records and archives in line with legislative and policy requirements.
- Promote the archives as a living resource that supports research, learning, and public storytelling about the Institute’s history and impact.
Batchelor Press - Lead the Institute’s publishing program, ensuring excellence, innovation, and financial sustainability.
- Oversee the commissioning, production, and distribution of high-quality academic, Language and creative publications.
- Oversee the management of copyright, licensing, and open-access arrangements in alignment with Institute and Higher Education sector policies.
- Develop commercial and digital strategies to expand readership, sales, and influence.
- Integrate publication activities with broader Institute branding and engagement strategies.
Institute Art Collection - Oversee the management, care, and curation of the Institute’s art collection.
- Develop and implement strategies for public exhibitions, partnerships, and touring opportunities.
- Create opportunities to promote and commercialise the collection, including the sale of publications, merchandise, and student artworks.
- Ensure alignment of the collection’s activities with the Institute’s cultural and educational missions.
Cultural Leadership and Engagement - Work with academic, legal, and cultural stakeholders to protect and appropriately manage the use and reproduction of creative, scholarly, and cultural materials.
- Support culturally appropriate recognition, attribution, and access protocols, particularly in relation to Indigenous cultural materials and knowledge
- Champion a vibrant and inclusive Institute culture that values creativity, knowledge sharing, and cultural heritage.
- Contribute to institutional planning and policy development related to culture, communication, and engagement.

Selection Criteria – Essential - Significant experience in leading complex communications and cultural programs within a large organisation, ideally an education or cultural institution.
- Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams and manage staff performance and professional development.
- Demonstrated expertise in financial management, and revenue generation.
- High-level skills in strategic communication, brand management, and stakeholder engagement.
- Demonstrated high-level interpersonal, liaison and negotiation skills, and an ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures to build and maintain effective networks with a range of internal and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated organisational skills with the ability to work with a high-level of autonomy and accountability, manage competing priorities, and meet critical deadlines.
Desirable - Tertiary qualifications in one of the following communications, marketing, arts management, cultural heritage, or related discipline.
- Understanding of the role of art, archives, and publications in enhancing institutional identity and community engagement.
- Current NT Drivers Licence or equivalent and the ability to travel by light aircraft and off-road vehicles, including overnight visits to remote communities.
