Purpose of the Position This role is an excellent opportunity for a high-achieving graduate looking to start a career in Finance and Accounting. It provides comprehensive training while expecting the Finance & Accounting Officer to apply their knowledge in tasks across all core accounting functions, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, asset and liability management, and financial reporting.
As part of a collaborative and fast-paced team, the Finance and Accounting Officer will gain hands-on experience, develop essential technical skills, and build a strong foundation in financial management. This position is ideal for a smart, motivated, and analytical individual with strong academic performance and a passion for finance.
The role is fixed-term for two years, with the possibility of further opportunities based on performance, in line with the organisation’s policies and procedures.
Duties - Training in accounts payable and accounts receivable area for back up if required.
- Prepare and process journal entries.
- Assist with end-of-month and end-of-financial-year tasks, including journal entries and financial statement notes.
- Assist in preparing BAS and payroll tax reconciliations, with training to develop independent capability.
- Assist in preparing balance sheet reconciliations, with training to develop independent capability.
- Contribute to the preparation of project acquittal reports.
- Undertake ad hoc tasks as assigned by the manager.
Selection Criteria - Academic Excellence – A degree in Accounting, Finance or Business (mandatory) with strong academic performance (minimum Credit, preferably a Distinction average or higher).
- Commitment to a Career in Finance and Accounting – Demonstrated interest in building a long-term career in finance and accounting, with a willingness to pursue professional certification (e.g., CA, CPA).
- Accounting and Financial Knowledge – Sound understanding of accounting principles, Australian Accounting Standards, and financial reporting concepts.
- Numerical and Mathematical Ability – Strong mathematical skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and perform complex calculations accurately.
- Quick Learner with Attention to Detail – Ability to rapidly grasp new financial concepts, systems, and processes while maintaining accuracy and precision in work.
- Teamwork and Adaptability – Ability to work effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment, while also taking initiative when required.
- Strong Communication Skills – Sound oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare clear and concise financial reports.
- Proficiency in Financial Systems and Technology – Familiarity with accounting software and strong Excel skills (e.g., pivot tables, VLOOKUP, financial modelling) is desirable.
- Cultural Awareness and Workplace Ethics – Ability to work respectfully in culturally diverse teams, particularly within the social, political, and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
- Understanding of Compliance and Workplace Standards – A sound knowledge of equity and diversity principles, occupational health and safety regulations, and records management practices.
