Purpose of the Position The Institute undertakes a range of research and evaluation projects across disciplines such as First Nations education, mental health and parenting/early childhood. This position will undertake social justice research, specifically investigating pre and post NT Intervention data around child welfare notifications, interactions with police, employment statistics, health and families at risk.
The position requires strong data analysis skills to identify, interrogate and interpret a range of data sources/collections, to inform policy position papers and identify areas of research need. Using evidence from research, the position will apply for funding from relevant funding sources such as Lowitja Institute and NTAIC and others to work on creation of a centre for policy reform and advocacy.
The Research Fellow will also support research team activities and those of the Higher Education and Research Division more generally. They will identify and access complex data collections for routine and ad-hoc statistical analysis and processing and also assist project manage activities.
Duties - Identify and interrogate appropriate data collections/sources in relation to Indigenous interactions with welfare and police pre and post NT Intervention, as well as employment data, health and local governance.
- Research, review and analyse data, reports, published material, Senate Committees and expert opinion relating to the social justice and policy analysis, to provide information and advice, including national and international comparisons.
- Monitor and assist in responding to changes in Government policy, including preparing evidence-based policy position papers.
- Assist with grant funding applications, drawing on data analysis and writing skills, focusing on creation of a centre for policy reform and advocacy.
- Collaborate with other team members to support the work of the team and other designated projects.
- Other duties as required which may include projects and providing assistance to the corporate functions.
Selection Criteria - Possess strong critical and analytical skills, understanding of decolonization and decoloniality and Indigenous/Indigenist methodologies.
- Experience in undertaking research projects or activities independently and with minimal supervision, but also able to work as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to identify a range of appropriate data sources and analyse and interpret complex data.
- Well-developed research and writing skills, including the ability to draft reports and papers, synthesise key analytical findings, and present in various formats including to people whose first language is not English.
- Experience in project support to manage multiple projects and priorities, including excellent organisational and time management skills.
- Understanding of Indigenous Data Sovereignty principles.
- Awareness of contemporary policy and political environments and trends impacting social justice.
- Ability to build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and practices, and ability to comply with Institute WHS Policies and Procedures.
Desirable - Demonstrated experience in extracting and interrogating data using relevant software (such as SAS, SQL or R and BI solutions) and creating detailed technical documentation.
