Purpose of the Position
The Art Curator works closely with internal stakeholders (including Coomalie Cultural Centre, visual art lecturers and the Arts Committee) to coordinate the registration, records management, conservation, research/exhibitions and security of the Institute’s art collection.

Duties

• Coordinate the security, and implementation of conservation measures for the Institute art collection.
• Maintain and develop the collections database, and records management procedures to monitor location, condition, and movement of the collection and manage loan requests.
• Conduct ongoing audits of the collection and arrange valuations as required
• Advise the Arts Committee of requirements for the maintenance of the Collection.
• Implement the Institute’s acquisition policy and procedures to build upon and enhance the collection and undertake the registration of acquired works.
• Develop public programs including exhibitions relating to the Collection.
• Develop a rotation schedule of appropriate works for particular locations and environmental conditions.
• Attend Arts Committee meetings as required.
• Provide a curatorial report to each Arts Committee meeting.
• Undertake other reasonable duties as directed by your line manager.

Selection Criteria

1. Tertiary qualification in a relevant field and/or substantial recent experience in Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander art and/ or the public gallery sector.
2. Familiarity with the Northern Territory Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisations especially within the Indigenous Art and Craft industry.
3. Demonstrated capacity to undertake a range of administrative tasks relevant to this position including, the capacity to undertake research.
4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse teams within the social, political, and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities, and organisations.
5. Highly effective interpersonal skills including proficient written and oral communication which can be adapted to meet the needs of people from all educational levels.
6. Demonstrated experience in the submission and acquittal of grant funding applications.
7. Ability to build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
8. Demonstrated initiative and managing workload priorities.
9. Understanding of Work Health and Safety principles and practices, and ability to comply with Institute WHS Policies and Procedures.
