Purpose of the Position The First Nations Languages Coordinator is responsible for leading the development and delivery of accredited training in Learning and Teaching First Nations Languages, with the aim of supporting First Nations communities in the use and teaching of their languages. The position includes supervision of lecturers and other staff in the curriculum development and delivery of the courses.
The coordinator works closely with all areas of the Office of the Deputy Chief Executive Officer Academic and Student Experience, including the Dean of Higher Education and Research Division and the Director of VET as well as industry, language centres and community networks to determine priorities areas for delivery of training across the NT and nationally. The position will lead and implement courses consistent with the Batchelor Strategic Plan.
Duties - Lead the delivery of accredited courses in learning and teaching Australian First Nations Languages. This involves ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations including the ASQA quality standards, funding bodies and course licence holders.
- Build and manage language specific teams for delivery that include First nations speakers of the languages.
- Liaise with First Nations language communities, employers, and other organisations to ensure teaching, learning and assessment reflects community standards, values and aspirations and current industry practices.
- Continue to develop own knowledge and skills by participating in community and professional networks/events/ and consultations.
- Collect quantitative and qualitative data as required for reporting and research purposes.
- Analyse data to inform and target future program development needs and build student capacity as part of the continual improvement process of First Nations languages training at Batchelor Institute.
- Sit on relevant committees, attend meetings, stakeholder engagement, including ILA, FLA, Department of Education (NT and Federal).
- Contribute to the development of resources and programs using flexible learning strategies and authentic learning experiences contextualised to the specific language context and reflecting the Batchelor Institute Learning and Teaching Framework.
- Collect data and write progress reports and academic papers as part of the continual improvement of literacy and numeracy programs at Batchelor Institute.
Selection Criteria - Demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse teams within the social, political, and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities, and organisations.
- Relevant professional qualifications, eg Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, Education, Literacy/Numeracy, Adult Learning or similar including a current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) or willingness to obtain.
- Experience designing and teaching language courses, preferably within a VET environment.
- Demonstrated experience managing staff and budgets.
- The ability to involve students, community members and a range of diverse agency groups in the development of dynamic teaching, learning and assessment programs.
- Experience in research and evaluation of education programs and ability to report to internal and external organisations on program outcomes.
- Well-developed problem-solving, organisational and administrative skills and demonstrated initiative and managing workload priorities.
- Ability to build strong relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
- Highly effective interpersonal skills including proficient written and oral communication which can be adapted to meet the needs of people from all educational levels.

- Applicants must be able and willing to undertake travel throughout the NT and Interstate (sometimes as a light aircraft passenger) and possess a C class Driver’s Licence.
Supervisory Responsibilities This position holds formal supervisory responsibilities. As a supervisor, this position will undertake and be responsible and accountable for:
- Ensuring all direct reports have completed all Mandatory training as required by the Institute.
- Probation periods being monitored and completed for each direct report in a timely manner.
- Ensuring an annual leave plan is developed and implemented for all direct reports and that annual leave balances are held below 30 days at all times.
- Ensuring leave bookings are accurately maintained and submitted in accordance with the Delegations (Administrative) Policy and relevant Staff Agreement/s.
- Engaging with direct reports to develop meaningful objectives and ensuring career development plans are established and recorded.
- Holding Performance feedback meetings on a regular basis (once per month minimum) with each direct report and provide feedback in a constructive and timely manner.
- Ensuring all delegations and responsibilities are undertaken in accordance with Institute Policies, Staff Agreements and Delegations.
Work Health & Safety - Ensure all activities comply with WHS legislation and Institute policies & procedures.
- Implement & monitor risk management activities including, but not limited to, workplace inspections, incident/hazard investigation and follow-up, and implementation of risk controls.
- Analysis of WHS training requirements for staff including the provision of training and monitoring of training to ensure completion and currency.
