What’s the opportunity
Reporting directly to the Financial Controller, you will take operational ownership of end-to-end payroll processing and industrial compliance for our workforce. Based full-time in our Macquarie Park office (Monday to Friday), this role is critical in ensuring accurate, timely payroll execution across both salaried and wage-based employees.
We are specifically seeking a Payroll Officer who can independently read, interpret, and apply industrial instruments, moving well beyond basic payroll entry from pre-supplied rates.
What you’ll do
- Independent EBA & Award Translation: Independently read and interpret Enterprise Agreements, Modern Awards, and NES provisions to construct payroll rules, check employee classifications, and ensure correct pay conditions are applied.
- End-to-End Payroll Processing: Coordinate and execute full end-to-end payroll cycles (via ADP Celergo and internal systems), managing PAYG, superannuation, leave loading, deductions, and termination/final pay calculations.
- Complex Earnings & Entitlements Application: Calculate and verify ordinary hours, overtime, penalty rates, allowances, travel/site payments, RDOs, leave, and public holiday provisions for salaried and wages-based workers.
- Discrepancy Resolution & Query Tracing: Investigate and resolve complex employee payroll inquiries and pay discrepancies by tracing calculations directly back to specific EBA or Award clauses.
- Compliance, Audits & Escalations: Perform routine payroll audits and reconciliations, verify how EBAs interact with Modern Awards and employment contracts, and escalate complex legal matters when appropriate.
- Systems & Process Governance: Maintain master employee data, support payroll compliance, and assist with system testing and configuration during process improvements or platform upgrades.HR
- Operational Administration: Manage essential employee lifecycle administration by drafting employment contracts and variations, coordinating recruitment scheduling and onboarding/offboarding workflows, tracking probation and leave, maintaining master personnel records, and acting as the primary point of contact for routine HR inquiries.
What you’ll bring to the role The ideal candidate is a reliable, proactive, and level-headed professional who takes pride in maintaining precise employee records and meeting strict payroll deadlines.
- Relevant Experience: 3+ years’ proven end-to-end Australian payroll experience, ideally within construction, engineering, infrastructure, manufacturing, or another EBA/industrial environment.
- EBA & Award Expertise: Demonstrated capability with Enterprise Agreements (EBAs), Modern Awards, and the NES, with the practical ability to independently translate agreement clauses into accurate payroll outcomes.
- Wages & Allowance Confidence: High attention to detail with confidence managing weekly or wages-based payrolls involving complex allowances, site payments, and penalty structures.
- End-to-End Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of Australian statutory requirements (PAYG, SuperStream, STP Phase 2, LSL, workers compensation) and experience with payroll reconciliations, audits, and ABA files.
- Communication & Discretion: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with absolute discretion when managing confidential pay data and senior executive inquiries.
