Electrical Engineer II, Substation Design | Medium and High Voltage Power Systems | Houston, TX
This role may also be known as:
- Substation Design Engineer
- Power Systems Engineer
- Substation Electrical Engineer
- Electrical Engineer, Power Delivery
Most engineers never find out what happens to their drawings after they leave the desk. Here, you will. This is an engineering-led power systems firm that designs, installs, tests and maintains medium and high voltage infrastructure in house, so the substations you design are the substations your colleagues build and energize.
As an Electrical Engineer II, you will sit at the center of that work. You will specify the transformers, breakers and switchgear, lead the drawing packages, guide the designers and drafters, and run the studies that prove the design is safe and sound. It is the kind of role that turns a solid early-career engineer into a well-rounded power systems professional.
The work spans utility, renewable energy, battery storage, industrial, petrochemical and other critical infrastructure clients, locally, nationally and internationally. Few roles at this level offer that much variety.
Why This Opportunity Is DifferentFull lifecycle exposure: design, installation, testing and maintenance all live under one roof, so you learn how design decisions play out in the field.
Real ownership with real support: you design under a Senior Engineer, yet you are expected to own your projects and represent the company with clients and suppliers.
Breadth of technical work: equipment specification, electrical and physical design, and a complete range of power system studies, not just one narrow slice.
Project variety: substations for utilities, renewables, battery storage, industrial and petrochemical facilities keep the work fresh and your skills marketable.
A culture that backs you: a supportive, high-performance environment where engineers are valued and empowered.
What You'll Be DoingDeliver complete substation design packages, including bills of material, specifications and design drawings, under the guidance of a Senior Engineer.
Specify major equipment such as generators, transformers, circuit breakers and switchgear that performs as intended in the field.
Lead the production of one-line diagrams, protection and control schematics, interconnection drawings, equipment arrangements, section views, grounding, conduit and cable tray plans and installation details.
Run power flow, short-circuit, device evaluation, coordination, static and dynamic motor starting, harmonic, ground grid and arc-flash studies that shape safe, reliable designs.
Raise the quality of every package by reviewing specified equipment and design deliverables before they leave the team.
Develop the designers and drafters around you through clear technical guidance.
Act as a trusted company representative with clients, suppliers and coworkers, and take ownership of each project you touch.

Two to six years of electrical engineering experience.
Electrical substation experience (required).
Passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.

A practical grasp of constructability, field concepts, practices and procedures.
An NCEES record is a plus.
Participation in professional societies, particularly IEEE, is a plus.
