Maintenance Engineer, Slitting & Converting Equipment (High-Speed Web Handling)
This role may also be known as:
- Slitter Maintenance Technician
- Converting Equipment Maintenance Engineer
- Industrial Maintenance Technician, Web Handling
- Electromechanical Maintenance Technician
What if your next role made you the person production can't run without? This is a hands-on Maintenance Engineer position built around ownership. You will be the dedicated maintenance expert for five industrial slitting and converting lines, responsible for the preventive, predictive and corrective work that keeps them running at full speed and full quality.
The equipment variety here is rare. Wide-web tensioning and dancer rolls on a 120 inch line, high-speed rewind turrets and auto-splice systems, precision score and anvil calibration, and an ultra high-speed multi-function line running all three slit systems. If you love getting deep into mechanical, electrical, PLC and drive systems, this is a place where that expertise is put to work every day and genuinely valued.
Why This Opportunity Is Different Most maintenance roles spread you thin across a whole plant. This one gives you clear ownership of a defined set of high-value lines, so you can build a PM program properly, see the results of your work and become the recognized expert on the floor. You will work side by side with production operators and the engineering team, with a direct voice in reliability and continuous improvement decisions. Lean, TPM and 5S are part of how the operation runs, so your ideas for cutting downtime and extending blade life have a real path to implementation. You will also train operators, which builds your leadership credibility and positions you for growth into senior reliability or maintenance leadership roles.
What You'll Be Doing - Building and running PM programs across five slitter lines that maximize uptime and align with OEM specifications.
- Catching wear and failure early through inspections and monitoring of vibration, temperature and cycle counts.
- Keeping slit-width accuracy, blade engagement and shear clearance dialed in across razor, score and shear setups.
- Leading root-cause analysis on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic breakdowns so problems stay fixed.
- Solving web-handling challenges including tension control, edge guiding, rewind and unwind alignment and core chucking.
- Repairing and replacing AC/DC motors, VFDs, servo drives and couplings, and diagnosing PLC systems through ladder logic and HMI fault codes.
- Returning equipment to run-ready condition with trial runs, operator sign-offs and fully verified guards, interlocks and E-stops.
- Partnering with production and process engineering to reduce changeover times, extend blade life and lift OEE.
- Training operators on machine care, early fault detection and tooling handling.
What We're Looking For - 5+ years of industrial maintenance experience on converting, slitting, printing or web-handling machinery.
- Hands-on experience with razor, score and/or shear slitting systems.
- Proficiency with AC/DC motors, VFDs, servo drives and motion control.
- Ability to read mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams and PLC ladder logic.
- Demonstrated knowledge of LOTO, OSHA standards and CMMS software.
- Associate's degree or technical diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Electromechanical Technology or equivalent practical experience.
- A calm, methodical troubleshooter who takes ownership and communicates clearly with operators and engineers.
- Bonus points for experience on Ashe, Deacro, Titan, Atlas or Kampf slitters, Allen-Bradley, Siemens or Fanuc PLC/HMI platforms, NFPA 70E, CMRP or CCMP certification, and work with film, paper, foil, laminates or nonwovens.
Compensation & Work Model - Compensation is competitive and will be discussed during the screening process.
- Work model: Onsite, full time on the production floor.
- Shift flexibility may be required, including rotating shifts, weekends or on-call coverage based on production demands and unplanned downtime.
Location & Travel Carol Stream, IL (west Chicago suburbs). This role is fully onsite. No travel requirements have been identified.
The role involves standing, walking, bending, kneeling, working in confined or elevated spaces and lifting up to 50 lbs, with required PPE.
