Energy Data Analyst I: Build the Data Engine Behind a Utility's Power Supply
The Opportunity
What if your SQL queries and data pipelines kept the lights on? In this role, they help do exactly that. You'll be the go-to data and analytics resource for a utility's Power Resources team. You'll turn hourly-to-annual electric load and resource data into the insight that drives energy supply decisions.
This isn't a reporting seat where you only refresh someone else's dashboards. You'll design the databases, build the ETL workflows and around-the-clock pipelines, maintain the APIs that pull in large time-series datasets, and present the findings to the people who act on them.
You'll also get the stability of a public utility and one of the strongest benefits packages you'll find anywhere, so you can focus on doing great work.
Why This Opportunity Is Different
Most analyst roles sit far from the outcome. Here, your work feeds directly into counterparty settlements, reconciliations, and planning decisions, so data accuracy has real financial and operational impact. You'll own the full stack, from schema design and complex SQL to Python, ETL, BI, and presentation, rather than one narrow slice. The organization actively invests in growth through special projects, cross-functional initiatives, stretch assignments, training, and mentoring. It is also deliberately building analytics depth so no single person is a point of failure, which means collaboration and backup are built in.
What You'll Be Doing
- Delivering power market analytics and monitoring that support operations, planning, and decision-making
- Analyzing electric load and resource data at hourly through annual granularity to support counterparty settlements and reconciliation reporting
- Developing complex SQL queries and data models, and administering relational database systems
- Designing, building, and managing ETL processes and around-the-clock data pipelines, and resolving data quality and performance issues
- Maintaining data integrations and APIs that collect large time-series datasets from internal and external sources
- Creating dashboards and visualizations, and compiling, validating, and distributing KPI and ad hoc reports
- Running statistical modeling on structured and unstructured data to surface trends that matter
- Partnering with end users to define requirements and deliver solutions on strict deadlines
- Presenting written and verbal recommendations that support strategy and operations
- Contributing to cross-functional initiatives that improve systems, workflows, controls, and reporting
What We're Looking For - Bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, mathematics, statistics, a physical or natural science, engineering, or a related field (equivalent combinations of education and experience considered)
- Three to five years of full-time professional experience as a data analyst or in a similar role
- Complex SQL development and optimization, plus experience with relational databases including schemas, tables, functions, and views
- ETL tools for building, scheduling, and refining data pipelines
- Python and object-oriented programming, and version control with Git or GitHub
- Windows and Linux, Microsoft Excel, Business Intelligence tools, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Strong analytical, mathematical, organizational, technical writing, and presentation skills, with sharp attention to detail
- Sound judgment with confidential information, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively under tight deadlines
- Availability to work outside normal hours during emergency restoration activities or special projects when required
- Bonus points for PostgreSQL/pgAdmin, Grafana, R/RStudio, Java, AWS or cloud platforms, SharePoint, EDRMS, electric utility or energy market experience, SCADA, energy or financial reporting systems, or an advanced degree
- Applicants should expect to be tested on the must-have technical skills.
