Make a meaningful difference as a primary teacher in a welcoming remote Indigenous community in the Pilbara, Western Australia. You will join a supportive, well-resourced school with established programs, strong teaching practices and a close-knit team while experiencing the culture and landscape of remote Australia.
In this role, you will plan and deliver engaging, responsive teaching programs that support students' learning in a unique remote context. The school has around 30 students from Pre-Primary to Year 12 and has a close-knit team of teachers and Martu teaching assistants. The school day combines literacy and numeracy learning in the morning with practical, creative and physical activities in the afternoon. Students also participate in regular on-Country learning, creating meaningful connections between classroom learning, culture and community. The school is committed to supporting diverse pathways for older students, including trade qualifications and the completion of Year 12. The ideal candidate will be energetic, adaptable and aware of the opportunities and challenges of teaching in an Indigenous learning context. You will bring initiative and creativity to your work, enjoy collaborating with colleagues and community members, and be willing to design programs that integrate classroom and on-Country learning. Two-Way Science recognises the value of both Aboriginal and Western knowledge systems, using students' strengths in each to enrich their learning. Traditional Owners are supported to lead educational activities, with their knowledge valued in its own right and meaningfully connected to Western perspectives. When students see their culture, knowledge and community members reflected in learning, they are more likely to engage with school confidently. This creates a strong foundation for building Western science knowledge and connecting learning in HASS, the Arts and Technologies through authentic, real-life experiences. Regular Learning on Country field trips bring this approach to life, therefore, a genuine respect for Indigenous culture and a willingness to work closely with the community are essential. Th class size is a maximum of 10 students (likely less) with ages ranging from 5-16. you will be supported by a teacher assistant.
Located approximately 350km from Neman, the community has a general store, modern health clinic with a resident nurse, and visiting doctors and specialists. Newcomers are warmly welcomed. Midway through each term, staff take part in a wellbeing break to Newman to collect supplies for the remainder of the term. Transport, accommodation and meals are included, providing time to rest, recharge and enjoy the facilities and services available in Newman.
This is a fulltime position from ASAP until the end of the year, with the possibility of extending. There are opportunities for partners such as maintenance, grounds, gardening and cooking.
