A small school in the Central Desert, NT is seeking a Year 5/6 Teacher who can build strong relationships and deliver meaningful learning for students. The role would suit a primary teacher with the ability to deliver explicit, highly differentiated learning. They are looking for a Term 3 start through to the end of the year, with potential for extending. The school is located on the traditional lands of the Pintupi people.
This is one of the most remote communities in Australia. The school works in a context where language, culture and community relationships are central to student engagement and learning. The class size fluctuates throughout the year, but they regularly have between 10-14 students. The role would suit a teacher who is confident with explicit teaching, behaviour management and modified curriculum delivery. Literacy and numeracy are delivered through structured 20-minute rotations, with curriculum designed by the school network and highly modified to meet student needs. Afternoons may include subjects such as art, music and ICT.
The school has a small team of teachers, including support teacher involvement. The broader community has a range of basic services, including a general store, medical clinic, police, art centre, sports facilities, council services and a sealed airstrip.
Accommodation is fully furnished 2 or 3 bedroom house, with bedding provided. Teachers generally only need to bring personal belongings. A car is not essential, but is recommended given the remote location and travel distances.
The rewards of working here go well beyond the role itself. You'll live and work on-Country in one of the most striking landscapes in Australia — wide red desert, low ranges and big sky. Day-to-day life in community offers the chance to build genuine relationships with families, learn from senior people, and experience cultural life that few outsiders get to see. For the right person, it's a quietly rewarding place to teach.
Responsibilities include,
- Planning, preparing and explicitly delivering quality teaching and learning programs that align with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, relevant curriculum policies and the needs of students in a remote school context.
- Delivering structured literacy and numeracy rotations, including highly modified curriculum content designed to support student access and engagement.
- Supporting students through strong behaviour management, positive classroom routines and the active development of safe, supportive learning environments.
- Providing for the physical, social, cultural and emotional wellbeing and safety of students while at school.
- Using assessment information to monitor progress, provide feedback and report on student learning as required.
- Maintaining student records, samples of work and relevant reporting documentation.
- Working collaboratively with school staff, support teachers, families and community members to build respectful relationships and support student outcomes.
- Contributing to afternoon learning areas such as art, music and computers, depending on school needs and timetable arrangements.
Position is full-time, from Term 3 through to the end of 2026, with the possibility of extension. There may be opportunities for partners.
