A small community school in the Pilbara is looking for a principal for 2026 to lead, manage and support their school community. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a strong Indigenous led school in the Pilbara.
Using Martu Country as part of the classroom, the school provides learning environments for the students to learn all aspects of the Two-Way curriculum. The school curriculum has been developed by Martu people and include regular trips to various locations on Martu Country. You will be provided with the opportunity to observe, connect, learn and draw inspiration for collaborating with Martu educators and whilst supporting the teaching of Western learning content. Learning delivered in these outdoor learning spaces support high expectation relationships with students and Martu educators.
As Principal, you will foster strong, respectful communication with families, staff, and external organisations, and lead the implementation of the school's strategic plan and curriculum in partnership with the community. You will demonstrate strong knowledge of the curriculum and provide effective instructional leadership through coaching and supporting staff to deepen their understanding and delivery of the curriculum, including culturally responsive Two-Way education practices. A strong background in curriculum design and development is essential, along with experience working with remote schools and communities. You will work closely with Martu governance to keep families well-informed and actively involved in school decision-making, advocate for culturally responsive practices, and champion Martu ways of learning. Participation in Martu-led trips to Country and the integration of cultural learning will be essential components of your leadership to drive the Two-Way learning program. Your responsibilities will include overseeing the safety and wellbeing of students and staff across two campuses, managing student enrolments, transfers, and records, and maintaining school logistics, such as the vehicle fleet and staff travel arrangements. You will lead and support a diverse team, creating a culturally embedded, collaborative environment, while promoting Martu employment opportunities and staff development. You will be responsible for compliance with reporting and regulatory requirements, aligning financial procedures with school policies and maintaining compliance with WA Non-Government School Standards. You will also work closely with administrative teams and contractors on financial and operational oversight. With your strong communication skills, you will liaise with funders and regulatory bodies to ensure the school's continued success and adherence to standards.
Located in the Pilbara, the school has two campuses in the Western Desert approximately 6-9 hours from Port Hedland. With approximately 60 students, the school is overseen by the entire Martu community with a Martu leadership body that, in addition to involvement of all families, includes a school board of directors. You will enter a school driven by the community, for the community.
This is a full-time position for an initial 12-month period, with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement. Opportunities may also be available for a partner, including teaching roles and other positions such as maintenance, gardening, cooking, or education assistant roles.
