2026 - Accommodation, Location Allowance, Relocation, Course, Pets, Partner Opportunities.
Join a not for profit charitable organisation that operates independent special assistance micro-schools across Queensland, providing educational opportunities for young people re-engaging with learning. Governed by Indigenous leaders, it is a First Nations-led charity delivering programs on Traditional Land and committed to an Indigenous-led response to the growing number of disengaged young people in regional and remote communities. The school provides opportunities for learning that have real-world links to vocational outcomes, supporting students to build confidence and practical skills for their futures.
Located less than an hour north of Townsville on Nywaigi Traditional Land, this co-ed residential school supports around 30 boarding and day students from across northern Queensland. It represents an Indigenous-led initiative by community Elders, working in partnership with education and community services to create meaningful pathways to positive futures for young people. The school provides a nurturing environment where students can grow culturally, emotionally, intellectually, and physically — empowering them to engage confidently with their culture, community, and the wider world.
Learning is guided by the principle of being Two-World Strong — encouraging students to thrive within their cultural identity while engaging successfully in the wider community. Students are at the centre of all practice, with their needs, backgrounds, and interests reflected in culturally rich, age-appropriate, and academically achievable learning programs that maintain the integrity and intent of the Australian Curriculum. The school's curriculum incorporates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, cultural knowledge, and vocational learning, with teaching practice informed by the 8 Aboriginal Ways of Learning to promote relational and culturally responsive approaches.
Programs focus on literacy and numeracy development and include integrated, hands-on learning such as the Junior Ranger and Eco-Tourism programs, adventure-based learning, Indigenous languages, horticulture, fishing, wellbeing education, and digital creativity, including game design. Classes are small, typically 10-12 students with support from Education Support Workers, allowing teachers to tailor learning to individual needs. Teachers are encouraged to draw on their own strengths and adapt the organisation's literacy and numeracy frameworks, including resources such as YuMi Deadly Maths and MultiLit, to best support student growth and engagement.
Beyond the school, Townsville has plenty to offer. You can relax on the beaches at The Strand, explore Magnetic Island, or visit local markets and cafes. The surrounding area is full of natural attractions, including rainforests like Paluma Range National Park, waterfalls, and scenic hiking trails. There are also opportunities to learn about Indigenous culture and visit the Great Barrier Reef. Whether you enjoy the outdoors, culture, or just exploring, there's plenty to do outside of school.
The school is seeking teachers to start in Term 1, 2026.The contract will be on an ongoing basis. Partner opportunities may also be available
