A small, safe, community-focused school on an island in Arnhem Land is seeking a dedicated primary teacher to join its team. This role focuses on delivering high-quality education with a strong emphasis on relationship-building, cultural awareness, and re-establishing core programs.
The school caters for children from birth to Year 12, with a Families as First Teachers (FaFT) program for 0-4-year-olds and a combined primary and secondary school. As the Transition (Prep)-Year 2 teacher, you will work alongside committed Assistant Teachers, local staff, and school leadership to create a safe, engaging, and culturally responsive learning environment. The class has 13 students on the roll.
Living on the island offers a unique and rewarding experience in a close-knit Arnhem Land community. Life is deeply connected to the outdoors, with the sea, bush, and sky forming the backdrop to daily life. Outside of school, teachers can enjoy fishing, camping and exploring the island's natural beauty - ensuring you gain necessary cultural permissions. Life here is community-focused, and opportunities to engage in local culture and language are encouraged. The community is dry (no alcohol), and the pace of life is slower, giving you time to connect with students, community, colleagues, and the stunning environment around you. The warm climate is perfect for gardening, and the beaches, tidal flats, and mangroves change with the seasons.
The island has essential services including a small community shop with basic groceries, meat, fruit, vegetables, and dairy, a clinic staffed by nurses with a visiting doctor once a week, Telstra mobile coverage within the community, a fuel station, and a local council office. Regular weekday flights from Darwin to the island's small airstrip take around 50 minutes. Freight and larger items arrive via weekly barge.
