A culturally rich and welcoming school would love to invite passionate and culturally responsive primary and secondary teachers to join a dedicated team in a remote Aboriginal community in Central Australia. Located on Anmatyerr Country, approximately 2.5 hours from Alice Springs, this small school caters to around 25 students across both primary and secondary levels, including 12 students in Years 4–6 and 4 students in Years 7–12. The small class sizes allow for personalised, relationship-focused teaching.
Students speak Anmatyerr as their first language, with English often being their second or third. Some students also speak Warlpiri, Luritja, and Eastern and Western Arrernte. Teachers work closely with a strong local support team, including an Aboriginal Team Teacher with more than 20 years of experience. The school has a strong sense of connection between educators and the community, creating a welcoming environment where staff feel supported and choose to stay long term.
The school offers a rich and engaging curriculum. In the junior years, students follow the Read Write Inc. program, while in primary they use Burarra Books to support literacy development. Secondary students engage in a science program created in partnership with a distance education provider. The school is also proud of its local language initiative, where students help convert texts into Anmatyerr to strengthen cultural and linguistic knowledge. A strong wellbeing framework underpins the school environment, known as “The Three I’s”: I am a good learner, I am respectful, and I am working with others.
The community has around 200 residents and is uniquely situated within a working cattle station which you can explore. The area is surrounded by vast desert landscapes and striking natural attractions including a haven sanctuary nearby. There are plenty of ways to engage locally, including playing on the men’s or women’s AFL teams.
Laramba Community has a range of services including childcare, aged care, clinic, council office, activity centre, sports & recreation centre, safety patrol, church and a community store. It has an airstrip and a football oval, softball ground, bike track, cemetery and ceremonial shades overlooking the creek. The community takes great pride in its appearance, with beautifully maintained gardens that recently received a Keep Australia Beautiful award in 2024.
