A small, community-oriented school in the Kimberley region of Western Australia is seeking two adaptable and enthusiastic primary teachers for immediate or Term 3 start. These full-time roles are open to both short- and long-term placements and offer flexibility across a range of year levels from Kindergarten to Year 6. Classes could include K/P, Years 1–3, or composite K–6 arrangements, depending on the strengths and preferences of the successful applicants.
Located approximately 300 km from Derby and 450 km from Broome, the school is in an Aboriginal community of around 200 community members. With approximately 25 students attending, class sizes range from 6 to 11, allowing for personalised and supportive learning environments. The school embraces “The Muludja Way” – Binyidi, Smart, and Skudda – which embodies the Stronger Smarter philosophy and reflects the values of the Gooniyandi people. Binyidi, meaning "strong" in Gooniyandi, symbolises the resilience and cultural identity students gain from their heritage. "Smart" represents proficiency in Standard Australian English, enabling students to navigate both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal worlds.
Educational priorities at the school are guided by the Aboriginal Literacy Strategy, Explicit Teaching methods, and the Kimberley Schools Project. The project supports schools through four integrated areas: evidence-based targeted teaching with ongoing progress monitoring; early childhood education strengthened by community involvement; initiatives to improve student attendance through local collaboration; and enhanced community engagement through co-designed educational programs.
The school has a strong academic focus, particularly in literacy and numeracy. Explicit teaching of synthetic structured phonics, practice of oral language in SEA, phonemic awareness and vocabulary is expected as daily practice. Muludja RCS aims to build the numeracy capacity of our students with the support of the Shaping Minds Math Resources and high engagement strategies. Two-Way teaching practices, developed in partnership with Aboriginal Islander Education Officers (AIEOs), are integral to the school’s operations, incorporating cultural learning experiences such as weekly river trips. The school is committed to the Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework, with a strong focus on fostering meaningful relationships with students, families, and the broader community.
Being in the Kimberley, the area offers access to outdoor activities such as swimming and fishing, and is surrounded by natural attractions. Geikie Gorge National Park is a short drive away, known for its dramatic limestone cliffs carved by the Fitzroy River. Further, Tunnel Creek National Park and the Mimbi Caves offer opportunities to explore ancient cave systems and Aboriginal history. The school is also 200 km from the entrance to the Gibb River Road, a famous 660-kilometre route through some of the Kimberley’s most breathtaking gorges, including Windjana Gorge, Bell Gorge, and Manning Gorge.
Close to Fitzroy Crossing, the community has access to essential services including a general store, health clinic, visitor accommodation, and an airport.
This is a full-time position commencing ASAP or Term 3, open to short- and long-term placements. In addition to teaching roles, there are also employment opportunities for partners in maintenance, gardening, classroom support, and administration. Both experienced teachers and graduates are warmly encouraged to apply.
