Are you a passionate and engaging primary teacher eager to make a meaningful impact in a remote community setting? Do you have the skills to create and deliver a learning program tailored to the diverse needs, characteristics, and learning styles of students?
Located just two hours from Mount Isa, near the Queensland border, a small Northern Territory school is seeking a Year 3-6 teacher. With approximately 60 students, the school has children from birth to Year 10, all of whom are EAL/D learners. The school employs a synthetic phonics approach and the science of reading while incorporating cultural and language programs, working closely with elders. Situated on Alyawarr land, the community is home to approximately 600 people.
This position offers a unique and rewarding opportunity to engage with the Alyawarr community and adapt your teaching to meet the students' needs. You’ll collaborate with local teacher assistants and community members, integrating culturally relevant content and On-Country learning to support students connect with their land and heritage. Building strong relationships with families and the community is key to fostering trust and engagement. While living in a remote area requires adaptability, it also offers the chance to immerse yourself in the breathtaking landscapes of the Barkly Tableland, explore the region, and grow professionally and personally in a culturally rich environment.
The community has Telstra 4G, a medical clinic, a general store, Australia Post services, a police station (intermittently manned) and also swimming at the Georgina River. A nearby cattle station, approximately 10 km away from community, has a bar, restaurant, and hosts social events. Mount Isa, often called the "Oasis of the Outback," is only two hours away and is a vibrant hub in Queensland offering a range of services and activities. The city has essential amenities like healthcare facilities, retail outlets, and dining options. You can enjoy Lake Moondarra for fishing, boating, and picnics or explore landscapes ideal for camping and four-wheel driving. Mount Isa is also home to the renowned Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo, the largest rodeo in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting visitors worldwide. The school also offers an induction in Darwin at the start of the year and provides 4WD training for new staff.
Responsibilities include,
- Planning, preparing and explicitly delivering quality and effective teaching and learning programs, which are consistent with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and relevant curriculum policies, work programs and educational trends.
- Supporting students through interaction in a variety of settings and through the active development of supportive learning environments and effective behaviour management practices.
- Providing for the physical, social, cultural and emotional well-being and safety of students whilst at school.
- Regularly assessing students (diagnostic, formative and summative) for developmental, feedback and reporting purposes.
- Maintaining student records and samples of work and report on student performance to students, parents, the department and other stakeholders as required.
- Establishing and maintaining appropriate interpersonal relationships between the school, parents and community.
The position is full-time for 2025, with a possibility of extending. There are opportunities for partners including grounds, maintenance and repair work. There is also a secondary and a preschool position available.
Benefits The school will provide the following benefits:
- Salary between $92,215 - $131,349 annually, plus super.
- Annual remote allowances of $9,894, paid pro-rata fortnightly with salary. $11,836 with dependents.

Requirements Registered (or ability to) with TRBNT and a NT Working With Children check (ochre card) in addition to,
- Bachelor’s degree in education or equivalent.
- Ability to collaboratively plan, prepare and deliver teaching and learning programs to meet the diverse characteristics, needs and learning styles of students; which are consistent with relevant curriculum policies, work programs and education trends.
- Knowledge of and the ability to implement effective and inclusive teaching and learning processes, including the use of learning technology and assessment.
- Ability to differentiate for a variety of needs.
- Ability to communicate and relate effectively with students, staff and families through appropriate interpersonal skills.
- Ability to plan and apply appropriate behaviour management strategies that contribute to establishing and maintaining a supportive learning environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with school staff, parents and members of the local school community in order to establish and develop productive partnerships, in an intercultural environment to achieve optimal educational outcomes.
- Commitment to maintain current and relevant professional learning and meet Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.
- Strong organisational and administrative skills.
- Ability to build relationships and listen to the needs of the students, school and community.
