Are you an inspiring and adaptable teacher looking for a rewarding opportunity in a unique and culturally rich setting? A small community school on South Goulburn Island, located off the coast of Arnhem Land, is seeking a passionate educator to join their team in the Boys' Year 7-9 class. Situated on the land of the Mawng people, the school has approximately 50 students attending, with 12 in the class. The school is introducing an exciting new cultural program that includes language, singing, dancing, art, and cultural trips and camps, alongside established literacy and numeracy programs such as Read Write Inc for phonics and Learning Through Doing for numeracy. You will teach alongside local teachers, with the most senior local educator—who has been with the school for 24 years—leading cultural inductions for all new staff.
South Goulburn Island offers a truly unique living and teaching experience. The island’s peaceful atmosphere provides a perfect setting for immersion in Yolngu and Mawng traditions, including art, storytelling, and cultural activities, when invited. The area is rich in natural beauty, with pristine beaches, diverse wildlife, and exceptional fishing spots! Although there’s no swimming in the ocean due to crocs, you can go for a dip in rock pools, try crabbing, or head out hunting with the locals. Languages spoken on the island include Mawng, Kunbarlang, Kunwinjku, Djambarrpuyngu, and Galpu, in addition to Australian English. It is essential to respect local customs and protocols.
On the island, there’s a fully staffed health clinic with a visiting GP, a community store, a police station, childcare, and an art centre. Flights are available Monday to Friday, connecting the island to the mainland. This role provides a rare opportunity to connect deeply with Indigenous culture while living in one of the most stunning and remote locations in Australia.
