Are you an engaging and adaptive primary teacher with a passion for fostering student success, cultural enrichment, and making a meaningful difference? Immerse yourself in the stunning landscapes and vibrant culture of East Arnhem Land, a rare opportunity to experience something truly special! We currently have a Year 1/2 and Year 5/6 position available.
On the coast of East Arnhem Land, on Numburindi Land near the Gulf of Carpentaria and approximately 500 km from Katherine, a small remote school is welcoming two passionate primary teachers. This role offers the unique opportunity to build deep connections with students, families, and the community while witnessing the direct impact of your teaching. The school has approximately 70 students attending (numbers decrease in the dry season) and is supported by nine teachers and 15 local teaching assistants. Class sizes are small, with around 8-12 students in Year 1/2 and 10-15 in Year 5/6.
Cultural responsiveness is a key part of the curriculum, with programs that integrate Two-Way learning and On-Country activities. Local teaching assistants support each class, with language lessons incorporated . The school also incorporates "Two-Way Science," an approach that blends traditional Indigenous knowledge with Western scientific practices, creating an inclusive learning environment that respects Indigenous cultural perspectives alongside mainstream science. The school offers a cultural induction program, and, with community invitations, there are opportunities to participate in cultural activities. The curriculum includes Read Write Inc., LTD Maths, and PM Reading programs for literacy and numeracy. The school also offers a Learning on Country program and VET courses for students.
This small Aboriginal community, with deep cultural roots, offers a rare chance to experience and learn from Indigenous traditions, languages, and customs, when invited. Languages spoken here include Kriol, Wubuy, Nunggubuyu, Anindilyakwa, Wagilak, and English. Located on the southeastern coast of Arnhem Land, the community enjoys a tropical climate with a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May to October. Although swimming isn’t possible due to crocodiles, the fishing is outstanding. The community is accessible by air during the Wet season, with Alyangula on Groote Eylandt just a 30-minute flight away, Katherine 90 minutes and Nhulunbuy an hour away. Roads open again around April. Home to around 700 residents, the area is equipped with essential services, including two shops, a medical clinic, a police station, an Arts Centre, and a weekly mail plane.
