Civil Construction Supervisor
Location: Doncaster / Yorkshire, with UK-wide projects
Salary: £45,000–£55,000 per annum
Self-employed option: £225–£275 per day (CIS)
The Opportunity
We are working with a growing construction and infrastructure business looking to appoint an experienced Civil Construction Supervisor to support the delivery of a varied portfolio of projects across the UK.
This is an opportunity for a hands-on construction professional who knows their trade, understands how projects are delivered on the ground and has the confidence to take control of a site.
Operating within a smaller, fast-moving business, projects can vary in scope and require a practical, adaptable approach. The successful candidate will need to be comfortable switching between different types of work, managing competing priorities and ensuring projects are delivered safely, efficiently and to a high standard.
We're looking for a genuine all-rounder: someone with strong technical knowledge, a proactive attitude and the backbone to lead from the front. You should be confident making decisions, managing site teams and subcontractors, resolving problems as they arise and taking ownership of the work from start to finish.
This isn't a role for someone who prefers to manage from behind a desk. We need someone who understands the practicalities of construction, is willing to get involved and can bring structure, accountability and a strong work ethic to every project.
The Role You'll take responsibility for supervising day-to-day site operations across a range of civil engineering and construction projects, ensuring work is completed safely, productively and in line with the required specifications.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supervising and coordinating site activities across a variety of civil engineering, groundworks and construction projects.
- Leading site teams and subcontractors, setting clear expectations and ensuring everyone is working towards the same objectives.
- Overseeing works including excavations, drainage, foundations, concrete works, road construction, reinstatement and general infrastructure improvements.
- Coordinating labour, plant, materials and other resources to keep projects moving efficiently.
- Interpreting technical drawings and specifications to ensure works are carried out correctly.
- Planning daily activities, monitoring progress and adapting to changing site requirements.
- Identifying potential issues early and making practical, informed decisions to keep works on track.
- Maintaining high standards of health and safety, workmanship and site organisation.
- Monitoring productivity and ensuring work is delivered efficiently, with an awareness of costs, timescales and commercial requirements.
- Taking responsibility for site standards, challenging poor performance where necessary and ensuring the quality of work is maintained.
- Working closely with management to provide updates on progress, highlight challenges and support the successful delivery of projects.
About You We're looking for someone with a strong background in civil engineering, groundworks and general construction who can confidently supervise a broad range of activities.
You'll need to be technically capable, commercially aware and comfortable taking responsibility in a fast-paced environment. Just as importantly, you'll need the personality to lead people effectively, make decisions under pressure and ensure work is completed properly.
You'll ideally bring: - Extensive practical experience in civil engineering, groundworks or general construction.
- A broad understanding of construction methods, including drainage, excavations, concrete works, foundations, roads, reinstatement and site enabling works.
- Experience supervising site teams, subcontractors and multiple work activities.
- The ability to read drawings, understand specifications and translate these into practical site delivery.
- Strong leadership skills, with the confidence to take charge, set standards and hold people accountable.
- A proactive, solutions-focused approach to resolving technical and operational challenges.
- The ability to adapt quickly when priorities change or unexpected issues arise.
- A good understanding of health and safety, quality control, productivity and construction costs.
- A hands-on attitude and the willingness to get involved wherever required.
- Strong communication and organisational skills, with the ability to work independently and use your initiative.
Above all, we're looking for someone with the right attitude and practical ability.
You should be confident in your knowledge, willing to challenge things when necessary and capable of earning the respect of the people you work with.
SSSTS, SMSTS and other relevant construction qualifications would be advantageous. However, proven site experience, technical competence and the ability to lead effectively are the main priorities.
What's on Offer? - Competitive salary of £45,000–£55,000, depending on experience.
- Self-employed working arrangements available, with day rates of £225–£275.
- Company-funded training and professional development.
- Accommodation paid for where required.
- Genuine opportunities for career progression as the business continues to grow.
- The opportunity to take ownership of projects and make a real contribution to the business.
- A varied workload offering exposure to different types of civil engineering and construction activities.
