Te tūranga | The role
We're looking for an Infrastructure Planning Engineer to help make the investment decisions that will guide hundreds of millions of dollars of water and wastewater infrastructure over the coming decades.
Working across Asset Management, Operations, Planning and Delivery, you'll influence how Waikato Waters invests in its infrastructure—helping prioritise projects, manage risk, and ensure investment decisions are evidence-based, affordable and deliverable.
Ō mahi | What you'll do
This isn't a design role and it isn't a maintenance role. It's about solving long-term infrastructure problems—using engineering judgement, asset performance data, risk, lifecycle thinking and investment analysis to influence strategic decisions.
- Support the development of asset strategies and Asset Management Plans (AMPs).
- Undertake option assessments, lifecycle analysis, and investment prioritisation.
- Apply engineering judgement to assess asset performance, risk and future investment needs.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure planning assumptions are robust and deliverable.
- Develop engineering options and investment recommendations for long-term infrastructure programmes.
- Support regulatory reporting and assurance processes.
- Drive continuous improvement in asset planning practices and methodologies.
Ō pūkenga | What you'll bring - A relevant engineering or infrastructure planning qualification (or equivalent experience).
- Experience in asset management, infrastructure planning, or engineering — ideally in water, utilities, or regulated environments.
- Strong analytical capability, including lifecycle planning and option assessment.
- Ability to interpret data (e.g. condition, demand, hydraulic modelling, GIS) to inform decisions.
- Experience working across multidisciplinary teams.
- Understanding of asset management good practice (IIMM knowledge advantageous).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to translate technical insights into clear recommendations.
