Waikato Waters is a brand-new, publicly owned water utility bringing together water and wastewater services across the Waikato region — built from the ground up to deliver for communities today and for generations to come.
Te tūranga | The role
As we bring together six legacy councils into one organisation, we're creating modern systems, trusted information and smarter ways of working.
We're looking for a Senior GIS Specialist to lead our spatial information capability.
This isn't simply a GIS production role.
You will own the GIS environment that supports our water and wastewater networks - ensuring our spatial data is trusted, well governed and integrated with the systems our people rely on every day. Ultimately, you will be responsible for the ongoing management and development of Waikato Waters' enterprise GIS environment.
Working closely with engineering teams, GIS technicians, operational staff, technology specialists and external providers, you will ensure our spatial information remains accurate, reliable and fit for purpose.
You will also play a key role in improving how GIS integrates with asset management, reporting and operational systems as the organisation grows.
Ō mahi | What you'll do
We're looking for someone passionate about spatial information, enjoys solving complex data challenges and wants to influence how an organisation uses GIS to make better operational decisions by:
- Owning and administering our enterprise ArcGIS environment
- Managing the quality, structure and governance of spatial data
- Leading GIS integrations with asset management and other business systems
- Working with vendors and internal stakeholders to improve GIS capability
- Supporting GIS platform performance, security and reliability
- Identifying opportunities to automate processes and improve spatial data quality
- Providing technical leadership on GIS standards, data structures and best practice
Ō pūkenga | What you'll bring You will be someone who enjoys combining technical expertise with practical problem solving. You will also understand that good GIS isn't just about maps - it's about providing trusted information that helps operational teams make better decisions. Therefore, you will bring:
- Extensive experience administering enterprise GIS platforms, particularly ArcGIS Online
- Strong knowledge of spatial data management, governance and data quality
- Experience integrating GIS with enterprise business systems such as asset management platforms
- Strong understanding of GIS automation, workflows and spatial data structures
- Excellent stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to translate technical concepts into practical outcomes
- A relevant qualification in GIS, Geography, Spatial Information or a related discipline
Desired: Experience in water, utilities, infrastructure or local government would be highly regarded.
