Waikato Waters is being established to deliver safe, reliable and sustainable water and wastewater services across the Waikato region.
 
As services transition from six councils into a single organisation, we are creating a team of experienced infrastructure professionals who understand the critical role water services play in supporting communities, public health and economic growth.
 
We're looking for a Control Systems Engineer who can provide technical leadership across our operational technology (OT) environment and ensure the reliability, resilience and security of the control systems that support our critical infrastructure.

Te tūranga | The role
 
Reporting to the Operational Systems Lead, you will be responsible for the availability, reliability, resilience and security of the control systems supporting Waikato Waters' water and wastewater infrastructure.
 
This role combines technical leadership, operational technology expertise and cyber security accountability to ensure the safe and continuous operation of treatment plants, pump stations and network assets.
 
You will lead the development and maintenance of control system standards, oversee system performance and lifecycle planning, and provide expert guidance on SCADA, PLC, instrumentation and OT network architecture.
You will also play a critical role in maintaining and improving Waikato Waters' operational technology cyber security environment.
 
Ō mahi | What you'll do

• Lead the reliability, resilience and performance of control systems supporting critical water and wastewater infrastructure
• Investigate and lead root cause analysis of control system failures and incidents
• Develop and maintain control system standards, design principles and architecture frameworks
• Review and approve vendor designs, architectures and technical departures from standards
• Design, implement and maintain SCADA, PLC and instrumentation systems
• Plan and manage control system upgrades, renewals and lifecycle programmes
• Monitor and optimise system performance and availability
• Lead operational technology cyber security activities, including network zoning, remote access controls, patching and vendor access management
• Work closely with operations, maintenance, project delivery and external vendors to support reliable service delivery

To be successful in this role, you will bring a combination of strong control systems engineering capability and practical experience within water services operations.
 
Essential requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Systems Engineering, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
• Minimum two years' experience working within water services, ideally in a local government environment
• Demonstrated experience supporting operational technology or industrial control systems within utility or critical infrastructure environments
• Strong experience with SCADA systems, PLCs, RTUs, radio communications and Rockwell automation equipment
• Experience with industrial IoT or operational technology solutions
• Working knowledge of VPNs, Remote Desktop technologies, SD-WAN, EDR platforms, VMware, firewalls and Cisco networking technologies
• Strong understanding of automation processes within water and wastewater treatment plants, pump stations and associated infrastructure
• Experience managing or contributing to OT cyber security practices and controls
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues
