At the Sewing Basket, we sell donated fabrics, patterns, patchwork, embroidery materials, knitting and crochet yarn, haberdashery and more, while providing employment for people with disability. Our colourful shops give donated fabrics and other products a second life, stopping them from going to landfill. We are looking for a part-time retail assistant to work in our Kincumber store.

About the role:
The Retail Assistant is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of The Sewing Basket stores. This includes assisting with retail sales, ensuring the smooth functioning of the store, and providing excellent customer service. Key duties involve processing sales, handling cash and EFTPOS transactions, managing stock supply, and contributing to merchandising within the store.
Role Responsibilities:
- Provide support to a team of employees, volunteers and employees we support to promote customer satisfaction in the retail store.
- Assist in the day-to-day store operations, including stock presentation, categorisation, measuring, and labelling of stock for retail display.
- Assist customers with point-of-sale transactions, including calculating sales totals and operating the cash register and EFTPOS terminal, ensuring efficient and accurate transaction support. Maintain the POS area and store as an inviting space for customers.
- Performing the end-of-day sales tally and reconciliation and complete the necessary daily sales reports.
- Demonstrate a proactive and helpful approach when handling customer enquiries and complaints, actively listening to feedback and promptly informing your manager of any issues related to customer satisfaction or dissatisfaction.
- Provide customers with the necessary support to ensure a positive and satisfying shopping experience, while guiding employees and volunteers to remain focused on achieving the best outcomes for customers and the store.
- Maintain a professional and polite manner in all aspects of your work, showing respect to every customer and Sewing Basket team member.
- Assist with the coordination, collection and handling of incoming donations & preparation for transfer to The Sewing Basket warehouse.
- Contribute to the management of stock for sale and the reordering system via the Kincumber warehouse.
To be successful in this role, you will need: - Knowledge and understanding of sewing, quilting and related craft and skill activities would be helpful.
- Knowledge / understanding of the provision of effective customer service.
- Knowledge or willingness to learn all the essential activities associated with the point-of-sale requirements of the position.
- Collaborative when working with colleagues, employees we support and volunteers.
- Current NSW Drivers’ License
- Current First Aid Certificate
- Current Working with Children Check
