About the role
You will be responsible for overseeing and managing the portfolio of technology projects and initiatives within the organisation. This role ensures that all projects align with the organisation's strategic objectives, deliver value, and are completed on time and within budget.
The Technical Portfolio Manager will lead the Program Lead and Lead Business Analyst, driving best practices, implementing continuous improvement, and ensuring consistent, high-quality deliverables and outcomes.
You'll also be hands-on in managing projects, providing direct oversight and support to ensure successful execution and delivery. This role requires strong leadership skills, excellent communication, and the ability to navigate complex project environments while fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement.
What you’ll do
- Foster a culture of support by setting clear expectations, providing real-time constructive feedback, effective training, one-on-one coaching, mentoring to drive high performance
- Create a comprehensive strategy that aligns with the organisation's goals and objectives. This involves understanding the business needs, market trends, and technological advancements to ensure the portfolio remains relevant and competitive
- Ensure that each project within the portfolio is meticulously planned, executed, and delivered on time and within budget
- Establish a prioritisation framework to ensure that the most critical projects receive the necessary resources and attention
- Regularly review project progress, performance metrics, and outcomes. Provide detailed updates to senior leadership
- Proactively identify potential risks that could impact the portfolio. Develop and implement mitigation strategies to minimise these risks and ensure project continuity
- Perform ongoing risk assessments to identify new risks and update existing mitigation plans
- Ensure stakeholders have visibility of delivery plans, milestones, and targets across all projects
- Oversee the performance of key vendors ensuring effective collaboration and performance
- Maintain a range of processes and systems to ensure outcomes are monitored, tracked, evaluated, reported, and optimised, including budgets and expenses incurred as part of the program
- Continuously monitor industry trends and advancements in project management methodologies and technologies
- Promote the use of innovative project management tools and techniques to improve efficiency, collaboration, and project success rates
- Promote and integrate Agile methodologies to enhance project delivery and responsiveness, ensuring project managers are trained in Agile practices
- Implement and uphold PRINCE2 methodologies to provide a structured and controlled approach to project management
- Combine the flexibility of Agile with the structured framework of PRINCE2 to optimise project outcomes
About you
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Project Management, Information Technology, or relevant applied industry experience
- 8+ years of experience in technical project management, with at least 4 years in a senior leadership role
- Experience managing project budgets, financial forecasting, and ensuring projects are delivered within financial constraints
- Strong knowledge of project management methodologies and tools such as PMP (Project Management Professional), PgMP (Program Management Professional), or PRINCE2 Practitioner
- Experience in Agile methodologies and practices, ideally including Certified Scrum Master (CSM) or Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Project, JIRA, or other portfolio management software
- Demonstrated experience in managing relationships and performance with external vendors and service providers
- Proven ability to negotiate effectively with stakeholders, vendors, and team members to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills
- Experience in writing business cases and aligning project goals with organisational strategy
- Experience in identifying and managing project risks, ensuring appropriate mitigation strategies are in place
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present complex information to non-technical audiences
