An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced HV Project Manager / Senior Authorised Person (SAP) to join a growing renewable energy business managing a significant portfolio of utility-scale solar and battery energy storage assets across the UK.
This is a senior technical and operational role combining HV safety and control responsibilities with project management, contractor management, technical leadership and team development.
You’ll play a key role in maintaining the safety, reliability and performance of a nationwide portfolio of renewable energy assets, while helping to build and develop the internal HV capability.
The opportunity
As an HV Project Manager / SAP, you will share responsibility for the control and safe operation of the company's HV networks across the UK.
You’ll manage HV remedial works and fault response, oversee approved HV contractors, approve switching schedules and permits, and provide technical support across the operational portfolio.
A significant part of the role will also be focused on developing the next generation of HV capability, including training and mentoring HV Authorised Persons and helping establish consistent best practice across the organisation.
The role is predominantly home and field based, with office attendance required approximately twice a month.
Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, with an additional 1 week in 3 remote HV Control Engineer on-call rotation, for which additional remuneration is provided.
What you’ll be doing
Your responsibilities will include:
- Acting as a Senior Authorised Person for HV and LV networks across solar and battery energy storage sites.
- Controlling and conducting switching operations within the defined HV network boundary.
- Approving switching schedules, permits and relevant safety documentation.
- Providing remote HV Control Engineer support as part of the out-of-hours on-call rotation.
- Managing HV remedial works, fault response and punch-list activities across existing and newly onboarded sites.
- Attending HV faults where appropriate and coordinating their safe and effective resolution.
- Managing and coordinating approved HV contractors working across the portfolio.
- Reviewing RAMS, carrying out inductions and auditing contractor safety and quality performance.
- Selecting and appointing competent HV contractors in accordance with the applicable Distribution Safety Rules.
- Coordinating contractor activities to ensure remedial works are delivered safely, efficiently and within programme.
- Working closely with clients, portfolio managers, engineers and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Providing technical HV support across operational portfolios.
- Taking ownership of high-severity issues and escalations through to resolution.
- Developing and implementing HV best-practice processes and procedures.
- Auditing workmanship and service quality and implementing corrective actions where required.
- Ensuring technicians and contractors have the appropriate training, equipment and competency for their roles.
- Supporting the development of internal HV capability and upskilling engineers to undertake basic planned preventative maintenance on HV equipment.
- Working closely with the Authorising Engineer to maintain compliance, competence and robust HV governance.
- Supporting the continued development of SCADA, predictive maintenance and asset-management systems alongside engineering and technology teams.
- Ensuring compliance with relevant electrical, health & safety and industry requirements.
- Promoting a strong safety culture and leading by example.
Technical & safety leadership Safety is central to the role
You will be responsible for ensuring that appropriate control measures are in place before maintenance and switching activities take place, with a strong focus on eliminating significant hazards and maintaining high standards of electrical safety.
You’ll work within the organisation's Distribution Safety Rules, alongside relevant requirements including the Electricity at Work Regulations, ESQCR and HSG 230.
You will also contribute to regular health, safety and quality inspections, ensuring any issues or breaches are identified and addressed promptly.
What we’re looking for We’re looking for an experienced HV SAP / HV AP who combines strong technical knowledge with the confidence and leadership skills to manage contractors, projects and operational issues across a nationwide portfolio.
You will have:
- Current HV SAP experience.
- Extensive knowledge of HV electrical systems and safe working practices.
- A strong HV operational background, ideally including HV AP1 / AP3 experience.
- Experience managing or coordinating HV remedial works and maintenance activities.
- The ability to review and challenge RAMS and contractor work methodologies.
- Strong knowledge of HV safety rules and electrical safety requirements.
- Experience managing contractors and ensuring safe, compliant and high-quality delivery.
- The confidence to make decisions and take ownership of issues through to resolution.
- Strong organisational and project-management skills.
- The ability to work autonomously and manage competing priorities.
- Excellent communication skills when dealing with technical teams, clients, contractors and senior stakeholders.
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel and MS Project.
Renewable energy experience Experience within solar, battery energy storage or other renewable energy environments would be particularly advantageous.
Experience working with utility-scale renewable assets, HV networks, remedial works, O&M environments or energy infrastructure will be highly relevant.
Qualifications Essential: - HV SAP qualification/authorisation.
- Extensive HV technical knowledge and experience.
- HV AP1 / AP3 or equivalent operational experience.
Desirable:
- HNC/HND, degree or other relevant further education qualification.
- Electrical qualifications such as 18th Edition (2382), AM2 or 2391.
- Health & safety qualifications such as SSSTS, SMSTS, IOSH or NEBOSH.
