The opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Project Director to take senior delivery responsibility for a portfolio of five large-scale battery energy storage projects in Great Britain.nWith a significant portfolio of BESS assets across development, construction and operations, this is an opportunity to play a key role in delivering critical infrastructure that supports the UK’s transition to a more flexible, secure and decarbonised energy system.
You will have overall accountability for taking projects from construction mobilisation through to energisation, commissioning, completion and handover into operations.
This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role, with a particular focus on programme delivery, commercial performance, risk management and clear executive reporting. You’ll work closely with senior leadership, contractors, technical advisers, investors and lenders, with genuine responsibility for protecting project timelines, budgets and investment outcomes.
What you’ll be doing You will lead the delivery of five BESS projects, providing senior oversight across the full construction and commissioning lifecycle.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Taking ownership of the integrated delivery programme across the five projects, from mobilisation through to energisation and operational handover.
• Holding project managers, contractors and suppliers accountable for key milestones, critical-path activities and contractual commitments.
• Challenging programme performance, identifying slippage early and driving credible recovery plans where required.
• Maintaining a portfolio-level view of programme performance, resources, dependencies and priorities.
• Coordinating long-lead equipment, grid works, DNO/NGET interfaces, outages, approvals and commissioning requirements.
• Providing senior intervention where projects or workstreams are underperforming and ensuring corrective actions are delivered.
• Overseeing interfaces between civil, electrical, BESS, primary equipment, grid and commissioning activities.
• Ensuring completion, testing and handover requirements are planned and managed well ahead of project completion.

Commercial leadership

You will also have significant accountability for the commercial performance of the project portfolio, working closely with Finance and the individual project teams.

This will include:

• Maintaining oversight of project budgets, commitments, forecasts, contingencies and cash flow.
• Reviewing expenditure, purchase commitments and project costs within agreed governance and delegated authorities.
• Challenging contractor and supplier applications, variations, claims and requests for additional time or money.
• Identifying cost and delay exposure early and ensuring it is accurately reflected in forecasts.
• Ensuring changes to scope are properly controlled, with their cost, programme, risk and contractual implications understood before approval.

Reporting, governance and risk

A key part of the role will be providing clear, reliable and decision-focused reporting to senior management, investors, lenders and the Board.
You will:

• Establish and maintain consistent reporting across programme, cost, risk, HSE, quality, commissioning and contractual performance.
• Provide accurate forecasts for completion dates and final project costs.
• Maintain a clear portfolio-level view of risks, opportunities, dependencies and mitigation actions.
• Ensure project teams maintain robust programme, cost, risk, action and decision records.
• Identify issues early and escalate material technical, commercial, programme or safety matters with clear recommendations.
• Ensure project governance, delegated authorities and investor/lender requirements are followed.
• Drive accountability for actions arising from senior management, Board, investor and lender reviews.

Construction & commissioning leadership

You will provide senior oversight across the construction and commissioning of the projects, including:

• Civil, electrical, BESS, substation, grid connection and balance-of-plant works.
• Design, installation, testing and commissioning activities.
• Quality assurance, inspections, defects, punch lists and completion processes.
• Energisation planning, testing, witness requirements and acceptance processes.
• HSE leadership and contractor performance.
• Coordination with the Owner’s Engineer, technical advisers and specialist consultants.
• Successful transition from construction into operations, ensuring complete records and clear ownership of outstanding defects and obligations.

You will also lead and performance-manage the project managers responsible for individual sites, setting clear priorities, accountabilities and reporting expectations.

What we’re looking for

We’re looking for an experienced senior project leader with a strong track record of delivering complex energy, power or infrastructure projects through construction and commissioning.

You will ideally have:

• Significant experience leading construction and commissioning of complex energy, power, electrical or infrastructure projects.
• Experience managing multiple concurrent projects or a major multi-workstream programme.
• Strong programme-management expertise, including critical-path analysis, progress measurement, recovery planning and milestone control.
• Strong commercial understanding, including cost forecasting, change control, contractor claims, variations and delay exposure.
• Experience managing principal contractors, equipment suppliers, consultants and multidisciplinary teams.
• The ability to interrogate complex project data and turn it into concise, decision-focused information for senior stakeholders.
• Experience with project budgets, forecast final cost, commitments, cash flow and expenditure management.
• A strong understanding of construction completion, energisation, testing, commissioning and handover.
• Excellent risk-management skills and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues.
• The credibility and confidence to challenge contractors, advisers and internal stakeholders at senior level.

Desirable experience

Experience in the following would be particularly valuable:

• Battery energy storage system construction and commissioning in Great Britain.
• High-voltage substations, grid connections, DNO/NGET interfaces and energisation.
• NEC, EPC, balance-of-plant, BESS supply and major electrical equipment contracts.
• Project-financed environments involving lender, investor and Board reporting.
• Managing Owner’s Engineers and technical advisers.
• BESS performance testing, availability requirements, warranties and operational handover.
• Delivering projects within a lean owner/developer environment where individuals have broad accountability.

Your background

A degree or equivalent qualification in engineering, construction management, project management or a related discipline is preferred.
Chartered status or membership of a relevant professional body such as APM, PMI, CIOB, ICE or IET would be advantageous, although strong equivalent project-delivery experience will also be considered.
