The opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head of Contracts to join a growing, entrepreneurial business at the forefront of the UK’s energy transition.
The business owns and develops a significant portfolio of battery energy storage systems (BESS) across Great Britain, with projects spanning operational assets, construction and fully consented developments. With a lean and highly experienced team, this is a role where you will have genuine ownership, direct access to senior decision-makers and the opportunity to make a visible impact across a rapidly expanding portfolio.
As Head of Contracts, you will take ownership of the company’s key contractual relationships across development, construction, operations, financing and corporate matters. This is a broad, hands-on position combining contract management, commercial judgement, risk management and stakeholder coordination.
What you’ll be doing You will be responsible for ensuring that contractual rights are protected, obligations are understood and delivered, risks are identified early, and important actions and notices are managed within the required timescales.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Managing a portfolio of construction, BESS supply, equipment, EPC, balance-of-plant, O&M and long-term service contracts.
- Reviewing and managing contractual notices, claims, variations, extensions of time and change-control processes.
- Assessing contractor and supplier claims relating to cost, delay and contractual relief.
- Managing issues around delay, liquidated damages, defects, warranties, performance and contract close-out.
- Monitoring contractor and supplier compliance with programmes, testing requirements, performance standards and contractual deliverables.
- Supporting the negotiation and finalisation of new contracts, amendments and commercial settlements.
- Managing contractual security including performance bonds, guarantees, collateral warranties, letters of credit and insurance requirements.
- Supporting the ongoing management of O&M and asset-management agreements, including service levels, availability guarantees, equipment performance and lifecycle obligations.
- Acting as the internal contract-management lead for investor, shareholder, lender and financing agreements.
- Maintaining obligations, notices, claims, key dates and contractual risk registers across the portfolio.
- Identifying where project decisions, contract changes or other activities may require lender, investor or shareholder consent.
- Coordinating external legal advisers and turning legal advice into clear, practical actions for the business.
- Supporting due diligence for acquisitions, financings, refinancings and other project transactions.
- Providing practical contractual and commercial guidance to senior management, project and asset-management teams.
- Developing consistent contract-management processes, templates, reporting and governance across the business.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for an experienced contracts or commercial professional who is comfortable taking ownership and operating across a complex portfolio of infrastructure projects.
You will ideally have:
- Significant experience in contract management, commercial management, quantity surveying or a related discipline.
- Strong experience with construction, engineering, equipment-supply or infrastructure contracts.
- A proven track record of managing claims, notices, variations, extensions of time, delay and change control.
- The ability to interpret complex contractual provisions and translate them into clear commercial actions.
- Strong knowledge of contractual risk, liabilities, indemnities, warranties, guarantees, bonds and insurance.
- Experience supporting contract negotiation, drafting and close-out.
- Excellent organisation, written communication and document-management skills.
- The confidence to manage multiple contracts, deadlines and competing priorities independently.
- Strong commercial judgement and the confidence to work directly with senior management, contractors, suppliers, investors, lenders and professional advisers.
Desirable experience Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:
- Battery energy storage, renewable energy, power, utilities or major infrastructure.
- NEC, FIDIC, EPC, balance-of-plant, equipment-supply or long-term service agreements.
- BESS supply agreements or major electrical equipment contracts.
- Project finance, shareholder or infrastructure investment arrangements.
- Working with banks, institutional investors, infrastructure funds or pension funds.
- Lender direct agreements, conditions precedent, security packages and consent requirements.
- Adjudication, mediation, settlement negotiations or formal claims and dispute processes.
Your background We welcome candidates from a range of professional backgrounds, including legal, commercial, quantity surveying, engineering and project management.
Relevant qualifications may include a law degree or legal qualification, a degree in quantity surveying, commercial management, engineering or construction management, or professional membership of organisations such as RICS, CICES, CIOB or World Commerce & Contracting.
Equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
