Senior HV Design Engineer – Substations
Hertfordshire - Hybrid
£85,000 + car/car allowance + bonus

Fourblue are working with a leading energy infrastructure provider who is looking to recruit a Senior Design Engineer to lead HV substation design projects up to 132kV. In this role, you will take ownership of the electrical design process, mentor junior engineers, and act as the key technical point of contact for internal teams and clients. The successful candidate will ensure designs are compliant, technically robust, and delivered on time, while supporting smooth project delivery across multiple disciplines.

Responsibilities of the Senior Design Engineer:

• Leading the full design process for HV substations, including single-line diagrams, HV cabling layouts, and protection/control schemes
• Reviewing and approving calculations such as fault analysis, load flows, and protection coordination
• Ensuring all designs meet UKPN standards, BS EN, IEC regulations, and other industry requirements
• Mentoring and supporting junior design engineers, coordinating team activities and promoting high performance
• Acting as the main technical point of contact for clients, project managers, and internal teams
• Working alongside civil, mechanical, and commissioning teams to integrate designs across disciplines
• Supporting tenders, procurement, and value engineering exercises with technical input
• Troubleshooting design issues during installation, testing, and commissioning to maintain alignment with design intent
• Visiting sites and attending meetings to ensure real-world delivery matches design intentions

Criteria of the Senior Design Engineer:

• BEng or MEng in Electrical Engineering
• 5+ years’ experience in HV substation design (up to 132kV)
• Deep knowledge of UKPN standards, HV protection and control systems, and high-voltage design principles
• Proficient in AutoCAD, Amtech, ETAP, or similar design software
• Proven leadership skills with experience mentoring engineers
• Strong leadership and decision-making capabilities
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Full UK Driving Licence
