Are you an experienced Overhead Line Design Engineer ready to take the next step in your career?
We’re looking for a highly skilled professional to lead the delivery of overhead line (OHL) projects across transmission and distribution networks, supporting the UK’s growing energy infrastructure.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a specialist engineering team at the forefront of high-voltage design, innovation and technical excellence. You’ll play a key role in delivering safe, efficient and compliant design solutions while mentoring and developing junior designers.
The Role As Senior Overhead Line Design Engineer, you’ll take ownership of detailed OHL design activities across voltages from 132kV to 400kV. Working closely with technical, civil and electrical teams, you’ll ensure all designs meet client and regulatory standards, driving quality and consistency across every project.
Your work will include:
- Leading end-to-end OHL design - from route and profile design to conductor selection and clearance analysis
- Producing and reviewing line schedules, sag and tension data, foundation layouts, and technical reports
- Ensuring compliance with ESQCR, CDM and National Grid standards
- Collaborating with clients, contractors and internal teams to deliver integrated solutions
- Mentoring and line-managing junior designers, supporting their technical and professional development
You’ll also contribute to continuous improvement within the design function - shaping processes, maintaining technical governance and fostering a culture of learning and knowledge sharing.
About You You’ll bring a strong technical grounding in overhead line design, ideally gained through work on National Grid or UK DNO projects. You’re confident using tools such as
PLS-CADD and
PLS-Tower, with a deep understanding of UK and international standards.
We’re looking for someone who is:
- Degree or HNC/HND qualified in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering (or similar)
- Experienced in delivering and reviewing detailed design packages for transmission OHL systems
- Skilled in mentoring and developing junior engineers
- Organised, collaborative and committed to the highest standards of safety and quality
- (Chartered Engineer status or working towards is an advantage)
What’s on Offer You’ll join a growing, forward-thinking engineering team where your expertise will make a tangible impact. Alongside a competitive salary and pension, you’ll have access to structured professional development, mentoring and support towards professional registration.
