The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Site Geologist to join one of the UK's leading ground investigation and ground engineering businesses.
This is a nationwide, site-based position involving the supervision and delivery of ground investigation projects across the UK. You will work alongside experienced geologists, engineers, drilling teams and project managers, helping to ensure site investigations are completed safely, accurately and in accordance with project requirements.
The role is well suited to a geologist with previous UK ground investigation experience who is looking to develop their technical knowledge, gain exposure to a wide range of investigation techniques and progress their career within an established national business.

The Role
As Site Geologist, you will be responsible for supporting and supervising ground investigation activities on sites across the UK.
You will work closely with drilling teams, site supervisors, project managers, subcontractors and laboratory providers to ensure fieldwork is delivered safely, efficiently and to the required technical standards.
The role will involve frequent travel, and overnight stays may be required depending on project location and duration.
Key ResponsibilitiesSite Investigation Delivery
- Supervise ground investigation works on sites across the UK
- Assist with the mobilisation and set-up of investigation sites
- Liaise with drilling crews, project managers, clients and subcontractors
- Monitor site activities to ensure work is completed safely and in accordance with the investigation specification
- Maintain accurate site records, daily logs and project documentation
- Monitor progress against the agreed programme and report any delays or issues
- Support the safe and efficient delivery of site investigation works
- Ensure samples and field data are correctly labelled, recorded and stored
Ground Investigation Techniques
- Supervise intrusive investigation techniques including:
- Cable percussion drilling
- Rotary drilling
- Sonic drilling
- Window sampling
- Dynamic probing
- Trial pits
- In-situ testing
- Geophysical surveys
- Assist with groundwater and ground-gas monitoring
- Support installation of monitoring wells and standpipes
- Monitor drilling progress and sample recovery
- Record groundwater strikes and other relevant site observations
- Ensure investigation techniques are completed in line with project requirements
Geological Logging and Sampling
- Undertake soil and rock logging in accordance with current geotechnical standards
- Describe and classify soil and rock samples accurately
- Identify the principal soil and rock strata encountered in the UK
- Prepare borehole, trial pit and window sample logs
- Select samples for geotechnical and environmental laboratory testing
- Prepare and manage laboratory testing schedules
- Ensure samples are packaged, labelled and transported correctly
- Review field records for accuracy and completeness
Technical and Reporting Support
- Process field data and laboratory results
- Assist with the preparation of factual ground investigation reports
- Contribute to site plans, schedules, photographs and technical appendices
- Provide clear and accurate site information to project managers and reporting teams
- Assist with Phase 1 desk studies where required
- Interpret geological maps and published geological information
- Highlight unexpected ground conditions or technical concerns
- Support office-based project work between site assignments
Health, Safety, Environment and Quality
- Follow company health, safety, environmental and quality procedures
- Attend site inductions and daily briefings
- Work in accordance with approved risk assessments and method statements
- Undertake regular site checks and report unsafe conditions
- Ensure drilling teams and subcontractors comply with site procedures
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping and environmental control
- Report incidents, near misses and hazards promptly
- Support the delivery of projects in accordance with relevant legislation and industry standards
About You
We are looking for a practical, organised and safety-conscious geologist with previous UK ground investigation experience.
You should be confident working on active investigation sites, supervising drilling activities and logging soil and rock samples. Strong communication skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently will be important.
Due to the nationwide nature of the position, you must be comfortable travelling regularly and staying away from home when project requirements demand it.
Essential Requirements
- Previous UK ground investigation site experience
- Degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Geoscience, Civil Engineering or a related discipline
- Experience supervising intrusive ground investigation works
- Ability to log soil and rock samples to current geotechnical standards
- Good understanding of the principal soil and rock strata encountered in the UK
- Familiarity with geological maps and published geological information
- Basic understanding of groundwater and ground-gas monitoring
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Accurate record-keeping and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a wider project team
- Strong awareness of site health and safety requirements
- Full UK driving licence
- Willingness to travel throughout the UK
- Willingness to undertake overnight stays when required
Desirable Experience
- Experience supervising cable percussion, rotary, sonic or window-sampling investigations
- Experience preparing laboratory testing schedules
- Knowledge of geotechnical and environmental sampling procedures
- Experience assisting with factual ground investigation reports
- CSCS card
- CAT and Genny training
- Manual handling, first aid or other relevant site qualifications
- Experience working on infrastructure, energy, residential or commercial projects
- Working towards professional membership or Chartership
