The Opportunity An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Geologist to join the expanding West Yorkshire team of one of the UK’s leading ground investigation businesses.
This is a varied role combining office-based technical work with the supervision and delivery of ground investigation projects across the UK. You will take responsibility for organising site works, supervising intrusive investigations, logging soil and rock, processing investigation data and preparing high-quality technical reports.

The Role
As Senior Geologist, you will support the planning, supervision and successful delivery of ground investigation projects.
You will work closely with clients, engineering supervisors, subcontractors and wider technical teams to ensure investigations are delivered safely, efficiently and in accordance with project specifications and current geotechnical standards.
The role will involve regular site work across the UK alongside office-based project planning, data processing, laboratory scheduling and report preparation.
Key Responsibilities Ground Investigation Delivery
- Assist with the planning and organisation of ground investigation projects
- Set up and coordinate site investigation works
- Supervise intrusive ground investigations across a range of sites
- Oversee investigation techniques including sonic drilling, rotary drilling, cable percussion, window sampling, geophysics and trial pits
- Liaise with drilling teams, engineering supervisors, clients and subcontractors
- Ensure site works are completed safely and in accordance with project requirements
- Maintain accurate site records, investigation logs and technical documentation
Geological Logging and Technical Work
- Undertake soil and rock logging in accordance with BS 5930+A2
- Identify and describe the principal soil and rock strata encountered across the UK
- Interpret geological maps, published geological information and site data
- Prepare and manage laboratory testing schedules
- Process and interpret field and laboratory results
- Assist with groundwater and ground-gas monitoring activities
- Contribute to Phase 1 desk studies and site assessments
Reporting and Project Support
- Prepare clear, accurate and technically robust reports
- Review and organise ground investigation data
- Support factual and interpretative reporting
- Communicate findings clearly to clients and internal project teams
- Manage assigned project tasks to programme and quality requirements
- Support the wider team with office-based technical and project duties
- Contribute to the continued improvement of project delivery and technical standards

- Support less experienced geologists and site staff where appropriate
- Share technical knowledge and promote high standards across the team
- Develop strong relationships with local and national colleagues

About You We are looking for an experienced and ambitious geologist with a strong background in UK ground investigation.
You will be confident supervising site works, logging soil and rock, interpreting geological information and producing accurate technical reports. You should be comfortable balancing site-based responsibilities with office-based reporting and project coordination.
A proactive approach, strong attention to detail and the ability to communicate effectively with clients, subcontractors and colleagues will be essential.
Essential Requirements
- Previous UK ground investigation site experience
- Degree in Geology, Earth Science, Environmental Geoscience, Civil Engineering, Geography or a related discipline
- Ability to log soil and rock samples to BS 5930+A2
- Good knowledge of the principal soil and rock strata encountered in the UK
- Ability to interpret geological maps and published geological information
- Experience supervising intrusive ground investigations
- Understanding of laboratory scheduling and investigation data processing
- Basic knowledge of groundwater and ground-gas monitoring techniques
- Strong report-writing skills with excellent attention to detail
- Good organisational and project coordination skills
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- Full UK driving licence
- Willingness to travel to project sites throughout the UK
Desirable Experience
- Experience preparing Phase 1 desk studies
- Knowledge of multiple drilling and investigation techniques
- Experience coordinating drilling teams and subcontractors
- Familiarity with factual and interpretative ground investigation reporting
- Experience supporting complex or multidisciplinary ground investigation projects
- Previous responsibility for mentoring junior geologists or site staff
- Working towards Chartered Geologist or another relevant professional qualification
- Awareness of geo-environmental monitoring and reporting requirements
