What if your next AI model didn't optimise advertising clicks or increase sales...
What if it helped shape the future workforce of an entire nation?
The opportunity
Future Skills Organisation is looking for a Lead Data Scientist to become our most senior AI and Data Science specialist, leading the development of advanced analytics, machine learning. AI agents and intelligent data products that influence workforce planning and strategic decision-making across Australia.
This is a rare opportunity to build AI that genuinely matters.
You'll own the end-to-end lifecycle of AI solutions—from experimentation through to deployment—while helping establish FSO's long-term AI capability and technical direction.
Working alongside the Data Engineer, Data Analyst and Software Engineer, you'll solve complex problems using modern cloud technologies and machine learning, while influencing decisions that have real-world impact across Australia's Finance, Technology and Business sectors.
You will:
- Lead the design, development and deployment of machine learning and AI solutions.
- Build predictive models, intelligent automation and AI-powered products.
- Establish best practice across data science, governance and responsible AI.
- Provide technical leadership across analytics and AI initiatives.
- Partner with engineering and business teams to turn complex problems into practical solutions.
- Explore emerging technologies that strengthen FSO's AI capability
Why join Future Skills Organisation? FSO is the Jobs and Skills Council for Australia's Finance, Technology and Business sectors.
That means we help government, industry and training providers understand where Australia's future skills shortages will emerge—and what needs to happen to solve them.
Data and AI sit at the centre of that mission.
You'll join a collaborative, remote-first organisation where curiosity is encouraged, innovation is supported, and your work has genuine national impact.
About youYou're an experienced Data Scientist who enjoys building things—not just analysing them. You can move comfortably between experimentation and production, understand modern software engineering practices, and enjoy translating complex AI into practical business outcomes.
You'll likely bring experience in: - Production machine learning and AI solutions
- Python and modern ML frameworks
- Azure together with Snowflake and/or Databricks
- APIs, cloud applications and software engineering
- GitHub, CI/CD and MLOps
- Responsible AI and model governance
- Explaining complex technical ideas to non-technical audiences
- Leading/managing small productive teams working at pace
Most importantly, you're curious, collaborative and excited by meaningful work.
What you'll love✔️ Build AI with real-world purpose.
✔️Own and shape an organisation's AI capability.
