Position: Family Engagement Volunteer
Program Area: Community Engagement
Purpose / Objective
Engage with parents and carers to ensure they have awareness of services available to them and their children within the community.
The role will support families to utilise education and children’s services to provide assistance where needed.
This position works collaboratively across all ASC services and looks to facilitate opportunities for community connections and meaningful participation for families.

Reports to: Family Engagement Coordinator
Commitment Period: Minimum 6 months. The role is ongoing.
Days and hours required per week:4 hours minimum per week. Days and times are flexible and can be negotiated.
The majority of hours can be completed remotely with some face to face engagement with parents and carers required.
Duties & Responsibilities

• • Ensure that any well-being or safety concerns relating to families are promptly shared with ASC staffConnect and build rapport with families to develop their confidence to seek support and navigate services
  • Connect families to community resources to meet practical, material needs 
  • Ensure families have all the information required to meaningfully participate in events and programs of interest
  • Assess program activity and spaces for hazards, responding to, and reporting hazards to ASC staff in a timely manner
  
  Tasks will be tailored to volunteer strengths and program needs, and may include one, or some, of the following:
  
  • Assist families (remotely or in person) with the administration of preschool, primary and high school enrolment and school fees waiver applications
  • Assist families in person with the registration, administration and navigation of first days at childcare, preschool or OSHC
  • Maintain appropriate records within ASC systems as required by the allocated activity
  • Support families to source educational materials and uniforms for schooling 
  • Refer families to ASC’s Early Education program to access childcare for employment, respite, developmental needs and other purposes
  • Work with Management to advocate and address barriers to access to education and community participation for people seeking asylum
  • Provide families with the skills and knowledge to navigate child support systems available to them 
  • Provider event support at Family Days and other Family-driven group activities
  • Other as reasonably requested by Line Manager
  Selection Criteria
• Ability to identify family and individual client needs using a child-centred approach
• An understanding of the needs of people seeking asylum or the ability to learn
• Excellent communication skills with a diverse range of people
• Familiarity with the barriers people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds face when accessing services
• Initiative and ability to problem solve
• Ability to foster client strengths and empower independence
• Capability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Good organisational and time management skills
• Good computer literacy skills

• Demonstrate respectful and welcoming behaviour with all people at ASC in culturally appropriate ways
• Undertake a NSW Working with Children Check prior to commencement and ensure it is up-to-date
• Support a child-safe organisation by undertaking screening for suitability to work with children and vulnerable people and to comply with relevant state/territory legislative requirements
• The Volunteer will receive a thorough induction and orientation to their role and to ASC, including a detailed Workplace, Health & Safety briefing and support to maintain professional boundaries.
• Have received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
