Reports to: English Language Program Team Leader and Community Participation Coordinator

Minimum commitment: 6 months

Days and hours required per week: 5 hours a week.
Days negotiable.

Location: Majority of hours can be completed remotely online with some face to face engagement with volunteer teachers required at Newtown.

Key Responsibilities:

This role is Second In Charge (2IC) to the Team Leader English Language Program and provides coverage as needed of the following Team Leader tasks:

• Implement English Program Intake, Language Assessment and Class Allocation processes
• Refer prospective students to approved external service providers as required
• Build a collegial relationship with a team of volunteers, qualified English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers and support them with additional ESL resources, information, and troubleshooting
• Support Line Manager to facilitate regular meetings with the teaching team
• Collaborate with Line Manager to collect and record student and facilitator feedback for the purposes of continuously improving the English program, including an annual survey
• Contribute to English Service Map by adding information about new or changing English service providers that might be of benefit to people seeking asylum.
• Escalate internal referrals to Line Manager when students require support beyond their language needs
• Meet regularly with Line Manager providing quality, timely updates
• Promptly raise any concerns pertaining to client or teacher welfare with Line Manager
• Other as reasonably requested by the Line Manager.

• Experience in working with people from various backgrounds and cultures.
• Ability to work collaboratively with other staff and volunteers. 
• Strong organisational and time management skills.
• Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience of the Education sector, with strong understanding of the needs of adult and second language learners
• Functional IT skills such as use of email and word processing
• Ability to lead a group of volunteers, providing support and guidance as needed.
• Ability to adhere to policies in relation to code of conduct, boundaries and confidentiality.

  • Undertake a NSW Working with Children Check prior to commencement and ensure it is up-to-date 
  • Support a child-safe organisation by undertaking screening for suitability to work with children and vulnerable people and to comply with relevant state/territory legislative requirements  
  • The Volunteer will receive a thorough induction and orientation to their role and to ASC including a detailed Workplace, Health & Safety briefing.
