Senior Linux Systems Engineer - Scientific & Controls Infrastructure

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Linux Systems Engineer to remediate and maintain a fleet of Linux-based systems across data centre and field environments. This is a hands-on role supporting scientific instrumentation, controls engineering systems, and operational infrastructure within an industrial setting.
 
This position requires strong technical depth in enterprise Linux, virtualisation platforms, and scientific/controls systems, combined with excellent stakeholder engagement skills. The role is 100% on-site and involves working in laboratory and industrial environments.
 
Key Responsibilities

• Remediate and maintain enterprise Linux fleets (RHEL and/or Debian)
• Perform patch management and lifecycle support across data centre and field systems
• Support scientific controls, instrumentation, and SCADA/EPICS environments
• Configure and maintain virtualisation platforms (Proxmox, VMware)
• Administer backup and recovery systems (Veeam)
• Maintain monitoring platforms (Zabbix or equivalent)
• Support serial communication infrastructure (e.g., Moxa serial concentrators)
• Implement automation using Bash, Python, and Ansible
• Maintain accurate documentation and system records
• Collaborate with engineers, scientists, and operational stakeholders
• Ensure secure configuration and network compliance standards are upheld

Required Skills & Experience

• Proven experience managing fleets of Linux systems (RHEL or Debian)
• Strong command-line proficiency (Bash, Python scripting)
• Experience supporting Linux systems in data centre and field environments
• Familiarity with scientific controls and instrumentation systems
• Solid understanding of networking fundamentals and system integration
• Experience with Windows Server/Desktop environments and Active Directory/LDAPS integration
• Excellent documentation and record-keeping practices
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with varied technical stakeholders
• Comfortable working in industrial and operational environments

 
Desirable Experience

• Docker and container orchestration
• Ansible automation
• EPICS / SCADA controls protocols
• XWindows environments
• Managing Moxa serial devices
• AGSVA security clearance (current or previously held)

You are a hands-on engineer who enjoys solving complex infrastructure challenges in real-world environments. You are comfortable working both in server rooms and on-site with operational teams. You take ownership, communicate clearly, and understand the importance of system availability in scientific and industrial contexts.
