As a Power Station Chemist with Worley, you will manage all aspects of plant chemistry for our combined cycle gas‑fired power station, ensuring optimal performance, compliance, and long‑term asset health. As our onsite chemistry specialist, you’ll play a critical role in water/steam cycle integrity, environmental performance, and the safe, reliable operation of major power generation equipment. You’ll be a vital part of our collaborative team operating and maintaining Yarnima power station which supplies power to the township of Newman and the surrounding BHP mining operations within the East Pilbara. Working a 4/3 roster with flights from Perth in a supportive environment that values teamwork, problem-solving, and continuous improvement.
Yarnima Power station includes:
- 3 x Siemens SGT-800 Gas Turbines
- 3 x Heat Recovery Steam Generators
- 2 x Siemens SST-400 Condensing Steam Turbines
- A combined generation capacity of up to 190MW
Associated auxiliary plant includes:
- Water treatment (MMF, RO, Demin)
- Cooling Towers
- Waste water systems
What You’ll do: - Oversee day‑to‑day chemistry operations for the water/steam cycle, cooling water, boiler feedwater, fuel gas, and lubricants.
- Conduct routine and specialised laboratory testing to ensure plant chemistry parameters stay within operational and statutory limits.
- Provide expert advice to operations and maintenance teams on chemical conditions, plant performance, and contamination risks.
- Troubleshoot chemistry‑related issues, identify root causes, and recommend corrective actions.
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, sampling systems, and online analysers.
- Manage dosing systems, chemical inventories, storage, and safe handling practices.
- Develop and implement chemistry procedures, monitoring plans, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support environmental compliance, reporting, and audits.
- Work closely with operations, maintenance, and external technical specialists to support plant reliability and long‑term asset integrity.
- Lead and promote a strong Zero Harm and positive HSE culture across the site.
What you’ll have - A degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline.
- Experience in industrial, power station, or water treatment chemistry (experience with combined‑cycle or gas‑fired plants highly desirable).
- Strong understanding of water/steam cycle chemistry, corrosion mechanisms, and plant processes.
- Familiarity with online analysers, sampling systems, and lab instrumentation.
- Knowledge of chemical handling, safety procedures, and environmental compliance.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and diagnostic skills.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including clients
