An opportunity is available for an experienced and resilient Shelter Worker to join a dedicated team supporting single adult men experiencing homelessness at a 24/7 residential homelessness service.
This men's shelter accommodates up to 14 men in a shared residential setting and provides trauma-informed, person-centred support to clients with complex needs including mental health challenges, trauma, alcohol and other drug issues, and suicidal presentations.
This role is suited to someone who is calm under pressure, confident working independently, and passionate about supporting vulnerable people in a residential environment.
About the Role:
As a Shelter Worker, you will contribute to maintaining a safe, respectful and supportive environment while assisting clients to stabilise their circumstances and work toward greater independence and long-term housing outcomes.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing day-to-day support to residents within a residential shelter setting
- Conducting intake, assessments and case management support
- Risk assessments and safety planning
- Supporting clients with daily living skills and routines
- Responding to incidents, behaviours and crisis situations appropriately
- Assisting with communal living expectations and maintaining a safe environment
- Supporting referrals and engagement with health, housing and community services
- General household duties including meal preparation and maintaining shared spaces
About You:
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Experience working in homelessness, residential care, mental health or community services
- Strong understanding of trauma-informed and person-centred practice
- Confidence managing challenging behaviours and crisis situations independently
- Excellent communication, boundaries and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work autonomously during solo shifts and sleepover shifts
- Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain)
- Ability to obtain Police, NDIS and Working With Children checks
