Grid Compliance Engineer - Munich

The role in one line
Own grid compliance and plant certification end to end — from connection application and grid studies through Anlagenzertifikat A, energisation, commissioning and Anlagenzertifikat B — across a growing German portfolio of battery storage, flexible generation, hydrogen and pumped storage assets.
This is a newly created position. You will be building the function, not inheriting it.
Why this one is different
Most grid compliance roles in Germany sit inside a certification body, an OEM or a consultancy — you certify other people's assets, one at a time, and hand the file over.
This is the owner side. You hold the compliance lifecycle for assets that are kept and operated, across multiple technologies, and you get to design how the function works: the workflows, the evidence trail, and the interfaces with engineering, construction, commissioning and operations. Very few German employers are offering that scope to one engineer right now.
What you will own
Grid connection and plant certification

• Lead the grid compliance process for new and existing German assets under VDE-AR-N 4110 / 4120 / 4130 and the EU Network Code RfG (Type A-D classification).
• Own the certification chain: component and unit certificates through to Anlagenzertifikat A before energisation and Anlagenzertifikat B after commissioning, plus the Konformitätserklärung.
• Manage accredited certification bodies — scope, data packages, queries, timelines and close-out.
• Prepare and manage submissions to network operators: Netzanschlussbegehren, connection contracts, Netzverträglichkeitsprüfung inputs and the technical data sets behind them.
• Coordinate and witness compliance measurement and testing per FGW TR3, feeding the TR8 certification route.
• Run the technical interface with TenneT, and with distribution operators including SWM Infrastruktur, Bayernwerk Netz and LEW Verteilnetz.
• Keep certification and energisation milestones on the project programme rather than behind it.

Workflow and process build — the new-role focus

• Design the workflows, procedures and documentation frameworks for grid compliance across the project lifecycle.
• Build the interfaces with project management, engineering design, construction, commissioning, SCADA/controls and operations.
• Establish the data flows and reporting so compliance evidence is captured, traceable and audit-ready — the same evidence has to survive an Anlagenzertifikat B review and an operational handover.
• Find what can be standardised or automated across a portfolio rather than repeated project by project.

Technical assurance and studies

• Review and challenge electrical studies: load flow, short-circuit, dynamic stability, protection coordination, reactive power capability and Netzrückwirkungen (harmonics, flicker) per the D-A-CH-CZ rules.
• Own the simulation model position — DIgSILENT PowerFactory RMS and EMT models, and model validation to FGW TR4 standard.
• Ensure designs meet VDE-AR-N requirements, relevant DIN/EN standards and internal technical requirements.
• Support technical specifications, interface schedules and metering requirements.

Market registration and market access

• Marktstammdatenregister (MaStR) registration and maintenance.
• Balancing group arrangements (Bilanzkreisvertrag) and the interface to the BKV.
• Redispatch 2.0 onboarding under §13a EnWG — data obligations, Connect+ integration, EIV/BTR role clarity.
• Präqualifikation for balancing reserve participation (FCR, aFRR, mFRR) against the relevant TSO conditions.
• Messstellenbetreiber appointment under the MsbG, and the metering concept behind it.
• Where applicable: NELEV certification thresholds, KraftNAV for large transmission-connected plant, and §118(6) EnWG grid-fee treatment for storage and electrolysers.

Delivery support and operational handover

• Work alongside project managers through design, construction, energisation and commissioning.
• Ensure compliance documentation, measurement records and approvals are complete and auditable before handover.
• Support operations with ongoing compliance, plant modifications and assessment of changes to the technical connection rules.

What we are looking for
Essential

• Degree in electrical engineering or a closely related discipline (Dipl.-Ing., M.Sc. or B.Eng.).
• Working knowledge of VDE-AR-N 4110 / 4120 (4130 an advantage) and the RfG framework.
• Direct experience of the German plant certification process — Anlagenzertifikat A and/or B — from the developer/owner side, a certification body, an OEM or a consultancy.
• Experience with grid-connected generation or storage: BESS, gas engines/peakers, wind, solar or similar.
• Ability to interpret and challenge grid studies and protection/control schemes.
• Confident dealing with network operators and certifiers.
• German to at least C1 and professional English. The codes, certifier reports and network operator correspondence are all in German; the team operates in English.

Desirable

• DIgSILENT PowerFactory modelling, including model validation to FGW TR4.
• EHV connections (110 kV / 220 kV / 380 kV).
• Battery storage, hydrogen electrolysers or flexible generation specifically.
• Redispatch 2.0, balancing reserve prequalification, or metering / SCADA architecture.
• Experience building or improving engineering processes, documentation frameworks or data structures — not just following them.
• VDI membership or Ingenieurkammer registration.
