You'd own protection and control across a live portfolio — not one substation, not one project. Batteries, gas peaking, pumped storage and green hydrogen, at every stage from consented to operational. Our client develops, builds, owns and operates its own assets, so your settings, your schemes and your review comments actually get built and then run.
We're BTP. We only recruit in renewables and flexible generation, so you'll be talking to someone who knows the difference between a compliance test and a commissioning test.
The role
Head-office based in Central London, working portfolio-wide as the owner's protection and control authority:

• Own the protection philosophy and control philosophy across the portfolio — one consistent standard, applied to every project rather than reinvented per contractor
• Review and challenge contractor and OEM protection designs: relay schemes, settings, coordination studies, CT/VT sizing, tripping and interlocking, arc-flash and earthing interfaces
• Take protection settings from study to approval — reviewing coordination and fault-level studies from consultants and EPCs, and holding them to the connection agreement and the Grid Code
• Own the substation control and automation side: IEC 61850 architecture, SAS, RTU and SCADA interfaces, teleprotection, alarm and points lists, and the interface into the trading and control room
• Support energisation and commissioning — witness protection and compliance testing, sign off test records, drive EON/ION/FON evidence with the grid team
• Represent the client with NESO, the Transmission Owners, the DNOs, OEMs and specialist consultancies
• Feed lessons from operating assets back into the specification for the next ones

Where you'd be working

• Operational — around 800MW of grid-scale battery storage across twelve sites, including the UK's largest at energisation and the first large grid-scale battery in the UK
• In construction — a 680MW BESS on a 400kV connection, a 290MW BESS, and a 450MW peaker
• Consented — a further 2GW.
• In development — 600MW pumped storage and a 3GW green hydrogen project

What you'll need

• Degree in Electrical or Power Systems Engineering
• Real protection and control experience on HV assets, transmission or distribution connected — whether that's come from a TO, a DNO, an ICP, an OEM, a consultancy or an EPC
• Hands-on with numerical relays: SEL, Siemens SIPROTEC, GE Multilin/UR, ABB Relion or Schneider MiCOM
• Comfortable reading and challenging protection coordination and fault-level studies (PowerFactory, PSS/E, ETAP, CAPE or ASPEN)
• Working knowledge of the GB Grid Code, G99 and the ENA standards that sit under them
• Confident holding contractors to a standard, in writing and in a room

Advantageous

• IEC 61850 station architecture, GOOSE, and SAS commissioning
• 132kV / 275kV / 400kV connection experience
• BESS or inverter-based resource protection — the bits that behave differently to synchronous plant
• Omicron or Doble test experience, or having witnessed compliance testing on a live energisation
