The role
Octief – a part of ALS Global – is seeking a qualified and experienced Mycologist to join our Environmental – Industrial Hygiene team at Yatala, Queensland.
This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in launching and delivering mould analysis services in alignment with international standards, supporting our path toward NATA accreditation. You'll provide technical expertise across laboratory analysis, method development, and reporting.
The day to day
Your responsibilities will include:
- Perform mould analysis of tape lift and air samples in accordance with regulations
- Develop, validate, and maintain test methods and procedures for microscopy-based mould analysis.
- Set up and maintain laboratory equipment including microscopes and sample preparation tools.
- Provide technical advice on sampling methods and interpretation of results.
- Train and mentor laboratory technicians supporting the mould analysis workflow.
- Lead participation in external proficiency testing programs and support audits.
- Prepare and review high-quality technical reports and ensure timely client deliverables.
- Liaise with NATA and ensure compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements.
The essentials We’re looking for someone who has:
- A tertiary qualification in microbiology, mycology, biological sciences or a related field.
- At least 3 years of experience in mould analysis using optical microscopy.
- Knowledge and application of ASTM D7658-17 and ASTM D7391-20.
- Experience working in (or towards) ISO 17025-accredited environments.
- Proficiency with LIMS and Office 365
- Strong skills in identifying fungi to genus level using microscopy.
- Familiarity with method validation and proficiency testing programs.
- High attention to detail, independence, and strong communication skills.
- Flexibility and initiative suited to a start-up style, hands-on lab environment.
