Reporting to the General Manger Environmental ANZ, this rare and pivotal role is responsible for steering our Environmental business in Western Australian.  With laboratory operations based in Wangara, you will lead an experienced team focused on exceptional service to our clients and succeed within a highly competitive market.

Your expertise in creating efficiencies, coupled with strong commercial acumen and the ability to cultivate relationships, will be crucial in this role. We’re seeking a strong, visionary leader who is results-driven and passionate about building high-performing, cohesive teams with a culture of excellence. You value simplicity and focus, prioritize excellence over perfection, and foster a culture of high accountability to drive the business to new heights.

You will become a key member of our Australian Environmental leadership team. Our National Environmental business has a history of growth, strong financial performance with high quality service and a track record of exceeding client expectations. Your background in the leadership of a commercial laboratory or similar environment will be invaluable.

• Collaborates closely with laboratory and business services teams, identifying, enhancing, and utilizing their skills and expertise to exceed client expectations and support business growth.
• Acts as a key communicator, promoting best practices in safety and sustainability and facilitating the sharing of knowledge across the organization.
• Upholds the highest standards of quality for our clients, with a strong focus on productive and sustainable business practices.
• Embodies our company values, serving as a positive role model and representative of what we stand for.

The day to day
Safety, Quality & ESG

• Foster a working environment that aims to increase quality, safety, productivity and efficiency through upgrading technologies, methodologies and innovative processes.
• Alignment and support towards ALS’ carbon reduction strategy
• Compliance with regulatory and ALS policy requirements for governance
• Ensure legislative and best practise compliance issues are observed

Team performance

• Ensure structures & capabilities meet current & future business needs
• Lead a framework for employee engagement, development & learning
• Takes ownership of business-critical initiatives
• Ensure employees have suitable skills and training for the roles they are fulfilling, including mentoring to direct reports.
• Maintain a safe working environment so employees can thrive.

Strategy

• Strategic business planning & tactical execution of objectives
• Aligning the business with ALS mission, vision and values
• Leadership of Environmental hub laboratory and regional shop fronts
• Participation in the formulation of regional strategy

Financial performance

• Achieve budgeted financial performance and sustained profitable growth
• Preparation of annual budgets, managing CAPEX & OPEX, & cost control
• Cost control, labour management & operational performance

Client Focus

• Development and maintenance of client relationships
• Leadership of turnaround time performance & client service & high-quality service
• Development & execution of client retention, BD, sales & marketing & pricing strategies that positions the business for high levels of performance and growth. 

The Essentials

• Tertiary qualification in Science and or Business
• Depth of experience in business and people leadership, demonstrating sustained success across people, operational and financial metrics, within a large organisation (science or resource industry related field preferred but not essential).
• Passion for science, technology and innovation
• Alignment to ALS’s core values and culture
• Ability to think strategically and execute on projects
• A client focused business style and ability to develop relationships
• Mental agility – ability to understand and solve complex problems
• People agility – ability to maximise outputs from a diverse range of people
• Strong leadership attributes
• Business acumen – strategic planning, business planning and knowledge of financial instruments.
