About the Position ALS Coal Technology currently has a full-time position and a casual position available for Sample Preparation Technicians.
The full-time position is part of the Carbonisation team, which operates Monday to Friday from 6:00 am to 2:00 pm. This role involves the preparation and execution of the site's NSC Reactivity test. The NSC test is a widely recognized standard method for evaluating the reactivity and strength of metallurgical coke, a crucial component in blast furnace iron production. Additionally, the successful applicant will be responsible for ensuring the quality, performance, and reliability of the equipment.
The casual position is for the Carbonisation Team at Riverview and the Petrography Team at ALS Richlands. Typical hours are 6:00 am to 2:00 pm, with some adjustments as required by the Business. The role involves preparing coal and coke samples for testing. At Riverview, samples are prepared for simulated industrial-scale steel operations. At Richlands, samples are analysed to determine coal's rank and type, assessing its suitability for applications like coking. This role requires driving between sites, so a driver's license is essential.
No experience is necessary for either position, as full training will be provided to the successful candidates. Position Synopsis
Reporting to the Carbonisation Supervisor, the position requirements include but are not limited to:
- Ensuring that all work is carried out in a safe & efficient manner and to agreed standard operating instructions.
- Handling coal and coke samples and processing them according to current best methods.
- Loading and unloading coal & coke samples from various carbonisation ovens.
- A range of physical tests including sample preparation, sizing, crushing, dividing and sample storage.
- Transfer of validated results into the reporting system.
- Essential Skills, Experience & Knowledge
No experience is necessary as full training will be provided to the successful candidate. However, to be considered for this position you will have:
- A valid forklift licence is desirable but not essential.
- A strong focus on safety, quality, and teamwork
- Ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines.
- Comfortable with manual handling duties, including repetitive lifting.
- Be comfortable in a dusty environment, including wearing respiratory protection.
- Be comfortable with hot work, including working around ovens operating at 1000°C.
- Clean shaven to accommodate the wearing of respiratory protection.
- Competent within a strong safety culture
- Eagerness to learn and adapt to new systems.
- Candidates with previous coal sampling experience is preferred but not essential.
