About the Role
The Assistant Laboratory Manager at ALS Orange plays a key role in ensuring the smooth operation and efficiency of our geochemistry laboratory. This position involves assisting the Laboratory Manager in prioritizing and coordinating workflows to meet turnaround times, managing staffing levels, and overseeing special projects. Responsibilities include providing technical support to clients, resolving ambiguities in sample submissions, minimizing errors, and optimizing productivity without compromising quality. The role also emphasizes leadership in safety, teamwork, and human resource management, including recruitment, training, and performance management. With a focus on operational excellence and customer satisfaction, the Assistant Laboratory Manager ensures that the laboratory maintains high standards in both technical and administrative functions, stepping into the Laboratory Manager’s role when needed. Key qualifications include a science-related degree, five years of laboratory experience (two in supervision), and strong communication and problem-solving skills.
The day to day
The Assistant Laboratory Manager is responsible for:
- Assisting the Laboratory Manager in prioritising work orders with respect to turnaround.
- Monitoring workloads (in conjunction with Laboratory Manager) and assigning ‘due dates’ internally for reporting of results to ensure smooth workflows.
- Managing staffing levels according to workflows through labour management and cross training and proactively making recommendations on resources as required.
- Managing any special projects and act as an ALS internal Project Manager as required.
- Providing technical support for clients with respect to analytical methods.
- Rapidly communicating holding time issues to clients and resolving ambiguities in client submissions, making decisions where possible when clients are unavailable.
- Resolving any ambiguities with other ALS sites plus communicate regarding condition of samples and potential TAT issues.
- Tracking errors associated with incorrect provision of samples numbers and minimize such errors through regular feedback to the team.
- Prioritising ‘urgent’ work orders and coordinating the flow of these
batches through receipt and laboratory.
- Facilitating load shedding as required.
- Technical reporting of work order results.
- Providing a professional approach and leadership in the front-end area.
- Ensuring supplier invoice payments are kept up to date.
- Optimising turnaround time without compromising quality.
- Regularly assessing the laboratory with a view to increasing productivity, efficiency, safety and teamwork.
- Ensuring that appropriate human resource management practices and health, safety and environmental practices are being followed within the laboratory in relation to:
- Recruitment, Induction
- Performance Management
- Staff Learning and Development
- Liaise with HR in relation to performance issues, redundancies or dismissals
- Assisting the Laboratory Manager with the efficient running and the overall administrative coordination of the laboratory.
- Acting in the Laboratory Manager position in the Laboratory Manager’s
absence.
Other duties related to the successful operation and administration of the laboratory, as requested by the Laboratory Manager.
The Essentials: - Tertiary qualifications in science (preferably Chemistry), Geology or a related field.
- 5 years demonstrated laboratory experience with preferably 2 years in a supervisory role.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- A strong customer focus
- An understanding of basic business principles.
