The role
The ALS Environmental Division in Newcastle is seeking a full-time Sampling Team Leader to lead and supervise a dynamic team, ensuring quality, efficiency, and compliance in sampling operations while fostering teamwork and continuous improvement in a fast-paced, client-focused environment. The successful applicant will receive on-the-job training in the technical components and procedures of the role, plus a wide variety of laboratory processes associated with working in a modern microbiological laboratory.
The day to day
The Sampling Team Leader is responsible for:
- Supervising staff within the section.
- Ensuring all duties within the section are conducted in accordance with the Quality Procedures Manual. Keeping up to date with changes in methodology within the section.
- Keeping up to date with changes in methodology within the section.
- Maximum efficiency and productivity in the section. Fostering a work ethic within the section that increases productivity by:
- Ensuring resources are utilised effectively and efficiently
- Minimising wastage (e.g. field kit powder sachets)
- Reducing fuel consumption ()
- Optimising the work hours so samples are collected efficiently
- Addressing staff moral and performance issues, informing the business manager/laboratory manager/senior chemist, where necessary.
- Print sample labels, run sheets and coordinate the allocation of runs so they are collected efficiently.
- Assist in coordinating sampling out of normal hours and during events
- Prioritising the work received for the section.
- Approving by countersigning all section order requests.
- Training and development of section staff.
- Notifying the business manager / laboratory manager / senior chemist when deviations from a documented method are required or any anomalous sample behaviours.
- Improving and maintaining relationships to other sections.
- Performing housekeeping duties as required.
- Deal with clients to understand their requirements are met.
In addition to the duties listed above, the Sampling Team leader in the laboratory is also responsible for: - Ensuring accuracy of results and that maintenance of field equipment is carried out.
- Ensuring field data is entered to LIMS in an accurate and timely manner.
- Perform field sampling as required.
- Monitoring field instrument performance and identify deviations from specification and notifying Inorganics Team Leader if the instrument is not operating to specifications, including when instrument QC fall outside control limits.
- Ensuring QC field blank samples are processed at the required frequency.
- Investigating and rectifying anomalies reported for potential sampling contamination.
- Maintaining documentation of sample locations JSEA’s, GPS coordinates,
- Ensuring sampling vehicles inspections are carried out as well as services as required
- Any other duties as required.
The Essentials - At least 5 years’ sampling experience.
- Possession of current drivers license is essential
- A Team Leader should possess an appropriate level of aptitude for the section to be supervised and appropriate supervisory/leadership skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

- Ability to facilitate effective team workteamwork.
- Planning and organisation.
- Sound judgement and problem solving.
- Experience in a relevant area of work and assisting with developing and leading a team to meet required outcomes.
- In depth, sampling and instrumentation knowledge.
