Laboratory Supervisor - Motheo (Botswana)

The Role ALS Botswana is seeking a Laboratory Supervisor to join our team at the Motheo Site Laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing laboratory operations to ensure efficient workflows, accurate analytical results, and adherence to quality and safety standards.
 
As part of the site management team, the Laboratory Supervisor will also contribute to ensuring that the site's quality, safety, productivity, and cost management systems are effective and continuously improved.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
Compliance and Safety

• Promote and enforce the ALS Health and Safety Foundation Standards.
• Demonstrate and uphold ALS core values.
• Ensure compliance with ALS policies, procedures, and local legislative requirements.

Operational Management

• Ensure accurate and timely analytical results are delivered to clients.
• Oversee daily laboratory operations to ensure efficiency, productivity, and quality outputs.
• Ensure analytical instruments and laboratory equipment are properly maintained to minimize downtime.
• Monitor and improve laboratory processes to maximize productivity and efficiency.
• Ensure all analytical work is completed with a high level of accuracy and within required turnaround times.

Quality Management

• Review and approve outgoing analytical data.
• Ensure adherence to Quality Procedures (QPs), Quality Work Instructions (QWIs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and client-specific procedures.
• Maintain strong knowledge of and compliance with ISO 17025 quality management systems.

Team Leadership

• Supervise laboratory staff and ensure they have the training and skills required to perform their duties effectively.
• Support staff development through ongoing training and mentorship.
• Foster a positive and productive work environment with a strong work ethic.
• Apply ALS HR best practices in managing and supporting staff.

Resource and Performance Management

• Monitor laboratory consumables and inventory to maintain adequate stock levels.
• Provide recommendations to management on equipment upgrades, new technologies, and staffing requirements.
• Ensure effective use of resources and minimize waste.
• Minimize amended work orders resulting from analytical or operational errors.

Requirements

• Relevant qualifications in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, or a related scientific field.
• Previous experience in a laboratory supervisory or senior laboratory role.
• Strong understanding of ISO 17025 quality systems and laboratory accreditation requirements.
• Experience managing laboratory operations, instrumentation, and staff.
• Strong leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced operational environment while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
