ALS is a global leader in laboratory testing, inspection, and certification services. We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Hub Laboratory Manager to oversee the full operational, technical, and quality functions of our Johannesburg Geochemistry Laboratory.
 
This key leadership role reports to the Operations Manager, Geochemistry (Johannesburg) and serves as the second-in-command for the Johannesburg hub, ensuring efficient, compliant, and high-quality laboratory operations.
 
Key Responsibilities

1. Compliance & Quality Management

• Ensure adherence to ALS Health & Safety Foundation Standards and company core values.
• Maintain compliance with ALS policies, local legislation, and ISO17025 quality standards.
• Ensure readiness for internal and external audits.
• Oversee quality control programs and support the maintenance of ISO accreditation.

1. Operational Leadership

• Manage day-to-day laboratory operations to meet quality, turnaround time, and efficiency KPIs.
• Lead, mentor, and develop departmental managers and technical teams.
• Ensure effective investigation and resolution of laboratory incidents.
• Support performance appraisals and staff development in line with regional HR guidance.
• Ensure all analytical and sample preparation work adheres to ALS documented procedures.

1. Client Relationship Management

• Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients.
• Engage with clients to identify challenges, opportunities, and service needs.
• Participate in client meetings and ensure timeous resolution of queries and complaints.
• Align with regional objectives across the SSA region.

1. Reporting

• Participate in senior management meetings.
• Forecast workflow and ensure resource alignment with business targets.
• Compile and present key business metrics and performance reports.

1. Risk Management

• Identify and escalate emerging risks to management.
• Contribute to improvement of risk mitigation strategies.
• Assist in crisis management activities when required.

1. Financial Oversight

• Ensure financial viability of the Johannesburg hub laboratory.
• Support achievement of budgeted targets and profitable growth.
• Monitor monthly financial and budget performance.
• Participate in annual budget planning and risk assessments.

Qualifications & Experience

• A Diploma or Degree in Chemistry/Science (or equivalent), with strong technical knowledge in Chemistry.
• Minimum 10 years' laboratory management experience within a multinational geochemical testing, mining, or exploration environment.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (mandatory).
• Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment.
• Ability to travel when required.
