About the Role
ALS Geochemistry is seeking a Regional Eastern Africa HSE Officer to support and strengthen our Health, Safety, Environment, Sustainability, and Compliance culture across our Eastern Africa operations. This role is pivotal in ensuring operational compliance, enhancing safety performance, and embedding ALS' global HSE standards across all regional sites.
The successful candidate will work closely with operational leaders, HR, Quality teams, contractors, and suppliers, and will play a key role in developing and maintaining high HSE standards.
 
Key Responsibilities
Develop a Strong HSE, Sustainability & Compliance Culture

• Implement strategic direction for HSE and sustainability priorities in line with Geochemistry goals.
• Coordinate and communicate corporate HSE and compliance expectations.
• Support engagement with local regulatory bodies when required.
• Compile monthly regional HSE performance reports.
• Promote best practices aligned with global HSE programs and tools.

Manage HSE Program Compliance

• Interpret and implement ALS/Geochemistry HSE and sustainability requirements across all Eastern Africa sites.
• Ensure regulatory and corporate compliance across operations.
• Enforce HSE standards and track corrective actions.
• Promote a strong culture of reporting, reviews, and corrective actions.
• Lead regional efforts to roll out HSE initiatives and programs.
• Apply and support the HSE Escalation Protocol.

Monitor, Manage & Reduce Injuries

• Support injury and case management processes.
• Assist in implementing programs to reduce high-risk activities using Life Saving Rules, risk assessments, and incident trend analysis.
• Report on HSE strategy progress, PPI, ESG metrics, and compliance requirements.
• Participate in or lead local HSE audits.

Ensure Group-Wide Risks Are Monitored

• Manage local monitoring programs, including air, personal, and environmental testing.
• Support monitoring and review of lead and silica exposure control plans.
• Ensure mandatory training (inductions, specialty roles, refreshers) is completed.
• Present monthly updates on HSE programs to regional leadership.

HSE Responsibilities

• Build strong knowledge of ALS/Geochemistry HSE policies, standards, and tools.
• Hold operations are accountable to Global Geochem HSE Standards.
• Provide regular updates to the Regional HSE Manager.
• Support deployment of compliant HSE systems across the region.
• Deliver training, communication, and support for HSE initiatives.
• Identify, report, and address compliance issues, unsafe practices, or environmental risks.
• Strengthening HSE and sustainability culture through consistent leadership.
• Apply the Global HSE Escalation Standard.
• Provide HSE guidance for regional projects and MPTS plans.

Minimum Requirements

• Degree or certification in Occupational Health & Safety or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 years' experience with increasing responsibility in HSE roles.
• Expertise in health, safety, and environmental practices.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
• Ability to manage confidential information professionally.
• Excellent organisation, planning, and follow-through skills.
• High level of professionalism and sound judgment.
• Ability to work effectively with regulators and government agencies.
• Proficient in written and spoken English.
• Willingness to travel within the region.
• Must currently reside and be a resident in Zambia
